What I don't get is: How does he prove to the cops that he lives there? It's not on his ID or any other documents, he has no signed lease, etc.

1. Ask neighbors - If the guy has been coming in & out of the house then maybe they'd notice
2. Possessions strewn on the lawn - They came from somewhere, maybe the house that he was living in?
3. Possessions in the house - Why would they be there if he wasn't living there? Of course I'm talking about furniture and furnishings, as opposed to a toothpaste & a t-shirt
