Dantonio is doing OK so far, but MSU doesn't need to stampede out and rip up his contract the second he goes 8-5. What if they did that with JLS, dumped a Jabba-like contract in his lap when he went 8-5 his first season? We'd still be stuck with him.
They should discuss a nominal boost (he will move up the food chain when Tiller, and within a couple years, Paterno, go).
If he starts taking us to BCS bowls, then yes by all means, give him a nice new contract.

There is middle ground there buddy. I think we have learned of what the costs are to turn coaches over. If we can establish some stability, it will be an investment into the future. I don't ever want
MSU to be in a position to be FORCED to offer MD more money because another school shows interest or offers him more $$$. If that happens, we will have missed the boat. Everything is relative. A coach that can lead
MSU to multiple winning seasons (barely) and bowl games is going to be regarded very well and end up with a fat contract offer from another school (Saban). Then you could have another coach go to Florida and have similar success as the
MSU coach and get fired (Zook).
Bottom line, it's harder to win at
MSU because the program is on a different level than other tpo schools. So a small amount of success is going to grab the attention of bigger programs.
