The poll pundits rank the perennial powers in the upper half of the polls because there's a good chance they'll be right. Take a look at the number of MNCs for the 'overranked teams':

Michigan - 5
FSU - 2
Texas - 3
Nebraska - 5
Tennessee - 2
TExas A&M -1
Florida -1
Miami - 5
Clemson -1
Penn St.- 2

Compare this the MNCs for the most 'underranked teams'

Oregon - 0
Auburn -1
K-State - 0
Wash. St.- 0
Purdue - 0
Va. Tech - 0
LSU - 2
BYU -1
West Virginia - 0
Southern Miss - 0

Hmmm....4 to 27. Any real doubt about why the traditional powerhouses are ranked higher?
