JC WR

The JC WR is Jamar Howard from College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA whom Coach Dantonio recruited when he was @ Cincinnati. Howard was a non-qualifier and Dantonio helped him find a JC to attend. They have kept in touch through the years and Dantonio has offered him a scholarship. Howard is being heavily recruited and also has offers from Arizona, Florida St., Illinois, Louisville, Memphis, and Purdue but he claims a "high" interest in Michigan State. He will graduate from JC in December 2008 and could enroll in January and be available for Spring Practice 2009 with three years of eligibility left. He is about 6' 3" and 212 lbs. and runs a 4.5 forty (very similar numbers as Devin Thomas).
He has a good relationship with Coach Dantonio and that will probably bring him to commit to MSU.

I cannot imagine taking Gordon as a WR AND Howard.

If Howard commits fairly soon then Gordon may get left out at least as a WR, especially if Benny Fowler commits too. Both Howard and Gordon are considered "Possession" Receivers. Howard is considered to have more "upside" as a WR than Gordon while Gordon could be a good possession receiver in college but is considered to have an excellent chance to be an outstanding college Safety or even grow into a LB. If Gordon will consider playing Defense he might still be a viable recruit but Dana Dixon has already committed as a safety and I think Dantonio will fill out the DB part of this class with players who can play CB so the odds for Gordon are getting longer. My "gut feeling" is that Gordon is waiting for an offer from U of M.

yeah, I think he is hoping to get a UM offer as an athlete and will jump on it. If we land Howard, it would be a lose, but Howard would ease the suffering

I'm feeling really good about our overall depth in 09 after the Klatt commit, ecxcept for 2 spots. I would really like to see a TE or 2 and a DE or two added soon. It doesn't seem like we are even hearing much from these two spots. I'd really like to add atleast one 3 top 4 star player at each spot. If we can pull that off i see great things for this 09 class and our football team in about 2 years.

So with the soon to be officially announced Klatt commit, that leaves with about 7 or 8 schollys to fill depending on who you talk to.
Currently we have 2 RB's, 1 QB, 1 LB, 2 WR, 3 OL, and 1 DB when using Rivals to determine position. I'm curious as to what positions the remaining 7-8 will go. I definetely see us taking 2 more DL, 1 more OL, a TE and another LB but from there I have no idea. Using that formula we would have 2-3 scholly's left.
Side note, I can't believe it's July 8 and I'm already think about how to finish off the recruiting class.

So given that Thornton seems to be the #1 target at OT and given that we took three OTs last year and probably will only take one this year, it looks like with Klatt int he mix, we'll take one more OG to pair with Reynolds. That said, does anyone have an opinion of Koehne vs. Spiker? Rivals ranks Spiker higher while Scout ranks Koehne higher. Anyone care to share any insight? I know Spiker was one of the four "second tier" OSU prospects (along with John Prior, Sam Longo, and Klatt) who competed for a single offer which was given to Longo (verballed last week). Given that he was in that select group, I'm sure that he's a very good prospect.

So far we have 9 soon to be 10 committed kids (Plus the positions I think they will play):
4* QB Andrew Maxwell
4* RB Edwin Baker
4* RB Larry Caper
4* WR Donald Spencer
4* DT Blake Treadwell
4* LB Chris Norman
4* OC Nate Klatt(Tomorrow)
3* CB Pat White
3* S Dana Dixon
3* OG Micajah Reynolds
Then we are looking for 1 WR, 1 OT, 1 LB, 1 TE, 2 DE and then who knows where the other one will go.
This is how I would like it to pan out:
NR WR Bennie Fowler
3* OT Hugh Thornton
NR TE Edison Vushaj
3* DE Davon Custis
3* DE Dan France
3* LB TyQuan Hammock
3* OG Ryan Spiker/Kyle Koehne (Whichever one decides first)
Now if we are giving out 8 we leave room for Dion Sims if he wants in. If not bank the scholarship unless a guy like Lendell Buckner wants in.

i say unless Zook leaves, then we have no chance on Buckner or Hill.
i also like the Ryan Spiker/Kyle Koehne idea but i am skeptical of the Dan France committing to us.
but still, that is a really likely and believe able class

It's going to be real interesting how things pan out with Cam Gordon, Bennie Fowler, and Jamar Howard. I can't see us taking more than one more WR and all 3 of these prospects seem pretty good to me. Does anyone have a favorite of these three and why? Spencer seems a lot like a possession receiver to me, so maybe to change it up you go with Fowler and his speed? I don't know though, because Cam Gordon is a 4* and Howard seems to have pretty great numbers. Is it possible we take two of these three and are set at WR pretty good for next, and only take one next year?

Gordon has an ace in the hole: he's soon to be the favorite target of the top instate player in the class of 2010.

I like gordon because if things dont pan out at wr he can easilly move to safety or linebacker.
he kind of fits the devin thomas proto-type athlete bill.
I doubt dantonio takes a juco this year.
Its between fowler and gordon who ever commits first.

nothing could be further from the truth, both commited to illinois way before they where ready and both are looking hard at MSU.
IMO If MSU wins more games then illinois next year and keeps the heat on them, they'll flip.
you do realize lendell was just at camp a couple weeks ago and loved it.

i think spiker probably lost his ship. koehne and thornton project better as tackles and spiker was strictly an interior line prospect which msu already has 2 of

I see it happening fairly similar to you with a couple exceptions:
NR WR Bennie Fowler
3* OT Hugh Thornton or Kyle Koehne (Whichever one decides first)
NR TE Edison Vushaj
3* DE Davon Custis
3* DE Dan France (not sure if it will be France but definitely see us taking 2 DE's
3* LB TyQuan Hammock as a Plan A with Moffit or Swarz as Plan B's
4* WR/LB Cam Gordon
4* TE Dion Sims or bank like you said.
Basically the only difference is I only see us taking 1 more OL and taking 2 WR if and only if Cam Gordon is one of the WR's due to preference for athletes who can play multiple positions. Cam give you flexibility if he doesn't work out at WR he can be switched to LB or even S. Like it was mentioned before I think Spiker might have seen his ship sail so to speak.
Just my , I've been wrong before and this is what it looks like.
Keep up the great work
