Uhh. . .why? Isn't the whole point of a TE is to be "bigger than a DB and faster than an LB". Most B11 LBs are a heck of a lot faster than 4.88.

I'm not bashing him in anyway, he's got awesome size and could develop into a stud RT or something, but his speed is probably what is preventing us from offering at the moment. I'd love for him to be a Spartan, can find a place for him I'm sure.

Maybe is waiting for Dion Sims to commit and fill the void at TE.

Ben Coats, Ken Dilger, Frank Wycheck etc.. etc.. were all good to great tight ends who didn't have top end speed. 4.8 is plenty fast for a tight end as long as he's quick enough off the line and can catch the ball.

No.

Wr's are bigger than DB's and faster than LB's. A TE is supposed to be big enough to block an LB or a solid effort on a DE and have good hands. Generally they do drag routes and similar things, so speed is only a secondary characteristic. Now, the ability to work down the field to work a safety is an advantage, but size and leaping ability are the most important in this situation too. Leonard Pope, former Georgia Bulldog, and current Arizona Cardinal is a great example of the advantage of size.

At 4.88 you are fast enough to create some space and spread the field. At 5 or worse - red flag. At 4.6 or better - serious advantage. If a TE is under 6'4, they better be at that 4.6 side, 6'7+ then the 5.0 is more reasonable.

Guess I'm thinking of exclusive pass-catching TEs like gates/Gonzalez who, while being decent blockers, are get far more acclaim for their pass catching/speed for size ratio.

a 6'7 275 lb TE is like having an extra tackle during run downs (or even pass downs) which would be very nice.

He'd also be great for goal line situations, don't even have to do a fade route, run 5 yards, turn around and be ready for the ball 8 feet in the air.

Either way, I liked the kid before, I was just hoping for a KFD replacement right away. I definitely see him fitting well into Coach D's blocking schemes.

The 2009 recruiting class to date should make you believe in and trust MD. When he has fully evaluated him and the alternatives, he will offer. It is early.

I certainly do "believe in and trust MD", I was simply asking a question that was on my mind. I thought that was the whole point of this board.

It is the point of the board and the answer is that he's not a "Plan A" guy, at least not yet.

I think he will be soon. He probably projects best as a tackle how ever.

haha...yeah, lets see....you, accordingly to the article, have offers out to 2 TEs already, have 35 TEs on roster (a bit exaggerated), you dont use TEs much. Yeah, better recruit him as a tackle.

Dude's this size don't grow on tree's. I know speed is critical, but I like having guys who block the sun on the defense.

Could Reid be moved to DE? His height could prove beneficial when on passing downs.

No because he projects better as an offensive lineman. He has excellent size but his speed is concerning for him being a tight end.

We will see come summer camps.

I bet we will offer him soon as a TE. If he doesn't pan out during practice, they can just pack some weight on him and use him as a OL. Either way he seems like a good enough prospect to have on the team. Offering both Sims and Fragel is logical considering our lack of TEs.

I should add that MSU should be an easy sell to a TE prospect. We have no depth at the position, and we use TEs well, just show them highlights of KFD. It takes a smart coach to effectively use a TE, not many use them to their full potential. I'm not a huge fan of Treadwell, but I do like him for this.

Rivals - Fragel Names a Top Five $

Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Michigan. Grew up a Northwestern fan. MSU views him as an athlete that could play TE, OT, or DE. MSU waiting to watch him move before offering.
