Site that maps recruits and rosters

MapGameDay.com - National College Football Recruiting Map

Also seems we recruited closer to home than almost everybody

This chart shows teams whose recruits came from the closest distances. The average UCLA recruit came from only 117 miles away. Richard tells us that while 23% of the players from California stayed in the state, a whopping 43% of players from Texas didn't cross the border, which helps explain why five Texas teams show up in this chart. (That and the fact the state is so damn big.) Texas, for example, signed only one player from out of state and a check of the Longhorns' 2008 spring roster shows only seven players from outside the Longhorn State.

Some schools don't have to travel far to recruit the players they need. UCLA can focus on metro Los Angeles, while USC can recruit nationally with their reputation. Some schools have such a name they can recruit nationally. MSU can't recruit nationally. We have to pick our regions. We lost the NY/NJ area as the result of the coaching change, and losing our best recruiter, Jeff Stoutland. We have picked-up some in Ohio, getting some players that OSU didn't recruit, but we are not getting the top-tier player out of Ohio. We didn't have success in Pennsylvania, and our recruiting of metro Atlanta and Florida produced one recruit this year. Recruiting Illinois has always been a struggle for MSU, and with Iowa and Illinois depending on the Chicagoland recruit, things will still be difficult there. Thank God for Dan Enos in Michigan, or we would have had a terrible year.

Yeah. That is a great site. I made a thread about it a couple years ago, so I'm happy to see that they are still going as it seems to be getting better.

I'm glad I don't share your grim recruiting outlook.

So would you like to share your thoughts, or just do a "drive by"?

We still have a presence in NY/NJ as evidenced by having several kids come in to visit from there. Losing Stoutland affected our recruiting network, sure...but to say that it's "lost" is wrong. Harlon Barnett did a great job down in Ohio. Dan Roushar and Mike Staten picked up some kids in Michigan as well. Dave Warner made some great in-roads down south. Even Tressel threw his name around in Ohio and landed Gardiner. Enos did a great job, but of course he's going to do a better job here. He's been recruiting the state of Michigan for years. Coaches know him. Players know him.

From your post you made it sound like a much worse situation than it is. We are laying a foundation and making contacts and connections. I think that's it's ridiculous to assert that we can't recruit nationally. In addition to scouring through Texas we even had kids from California come and visit. Apparently they are doing something right. Something that we haven't seen in along time. What the other coaches did this past recruiting year will pay off in the future...even if it didn't land us any kids this year.
