18 Spots, 3 already filled.
According to Dantonio, we will have a class of 18 next year. With the three kids we already have commited...here is how I see the spots filling up...
QB - 2
RB - 2
FB - 1
WR - 2
TE - 2
OL - 3
DL - 2
LB - 2
DB - 2
Just for fun...here is a dream class from the names that have been tossed around thus far:
QB: Maxwell, Renner
RB: Baker, Caper
FB: Bell
WR: Spencer, Stokes
TE: Sims, Fragel
OL: Hall, Clemons, Matthias
DL: LaLota, Campbell
LB: Norman, Newsome
DB: Benton, Payne
Don't know about some of the kids, but 4 should be Rivals 100 and probaly 8 would be in the 250. Also, you have to love the fact that of the kids who have committed, they are all biger names on that list.

Nice dream team. I am not sure if we have to take 2 QBs this year. I would we take one stud, and then if we have a decent second choice we take them. But I wouldn't want to take two QB's just to take two QBs.
Merely because the coaches are so high on the current Sophomores.

Taking only 3 OLine in one class is dangerous.

The 2 QB's and 2 RB's who you have listed are probably the only ones who get offers. No point in offering more running backs with Baker already committed. I guess we could take 2 QBs as it would be nice to always have 4 scholarship ones on the team (of course Dixon could always move back to the O if needed). Assuming Maxwell commits, thats 1. Renner is kinda a guy we don't expect to commit here as a bunch a few BCS teams have already offered.
With only 18 spots can we afford to take a second QB and RB especially if they aren't blue chippers?
Assuming we get 1 QB, and Caper goes somewhere else (i'm going with probabilities here)
QB - 1
RB - 1
FB - 1 (fullback prospects don't really seem to be worth the scholarship. might as well just recruit another LB and move one over to the offensive side of the ball)
WR - 2
TE - 2 We have solid TEs, but depthwise KFD and Andino were not replaced
OL - 4 (need at least 3)
DL - 3
LB - 2
DB - 2 (maybe 3?)

I like the "Dream Team" List, I am sure that the staff has a list pretty similar to that, I think once summer camps commence we will find out for sure what the plan A's and B's are.

Is Dantonio taking six linebackers to fill a need, or is he taking six recruits who are listed as playing linebacker?
My gut feeling is that he is looking at the athleticism of six recruits who happen to play linebacker but would be capable of moving to DE, FB, TE or stay at LB.
Remember that 90% of coaching is judging talent and the other 10% is knowing where to play it.

I figured that, it just struck me as weird that he said (if they were 's words) we would take six LBs. It seems like he would have said something about athletes or guys we can fill needs with or move around.

Actually, it looks like the kid (Fox) who said that MSU was taking 6 LBs meant "offering" only 6 LBs. Trying to make sure the kid knew he was in elite company. After all, already having Norman in the fold will allow the staff to be choosy....

OK, why only 18 spots when we didn't even fill 25 this year?

Dantonio may have rewarded some walk-ons, and we are very young.... hence, not losing tons of guys next year.
Also, the 18 number is coming from Dantonio I believe. There could still be some attrition, as there was this year, and so I wouldn't be shocked to see us sign 20-21 guys when it all plays out.

It's all about class balance.
2008 - 21
2007 - 23
2006 - 28
2005 - 27
= 99 commits
For reference, here's out last 4 classes. Obviously if you dive into them you'll find some kids who never made it and other kids that were JUCOs and some that left early. Assuming that everyone was there in 2009 (sans redshirts) you'd expect that you could take 13 kids (85-72=13). That's not going to be the case, but I think you can see that 18 spots is a reasonable number giving it a quick once-over.

Question -- can we back date some of the kids into 2007 (early enrollees??) to free up room to add a couple more this class
Can we do anything like Alabama did in 2007 class and somehow sign 33 kids??

We're still going to be hindered by the 85 scholarship limit. No amount of backdating changes that.

You don't always sign 25. By my count we lose 16 scholarship players this after this season. If we could have signed 25 last season but only did 21 then thats 4 left over, 16+4= 20. So thats leaves 2 scholarships that may have been given to walk-ons or are no longer availible for some other reason. Its not like we are suddenly missing 5-10 scholarships or something, the math adds up.

I think the final 15 spots will go something like this
QB-1 (only really need one)
RB-1
TE-1
OL-3(2 tackles and 1 guard)
DE-3 (1 DT and 2 DE's)
LB-2
WR/DB-4
In the end there will also be some attrition and more schollies will open up.

you must take at least 4 offensive lineman every year to be successful.

Agree. I think we'll look to sign four OL at least.
With Ray's uncertain and McDonald's position undefined, we need more OL.
I bet of the 18 scholie's 7-8 are dedicated to DL & OL.
