MSU's 2009 class already generating excitement
"You can always get the feel of Spartan nation just by checking in with the Michigan State graduate.
And on Wednesday morning, Byrne was grinning from ear-to-ear while talking to one of our peeps.
It was obvious he was ecstatic about the previous night's news that Oak Park junior running back Edwin Baker had committed to signing a national letter of intent in February 2009.
And when you add Detroit Renaissance junior linebacker Christian Norman and Ypsilanti junior receiver Donald Spencer to the list of early commitments there is a definite momentum brewing in East Lansing.
Baker, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound speedster, received offers from Texas and Georgia.
Spencer, who is 6-3 and 195 pounds, was probably days away from an offer from Illinois, and Norman, who is a 6-2, 219-pounder, could have probably picked any school in the country.
And while the commitments are non-binding,
MSU football coach Mark Dantonio might be finished with his next recruiting class by Easter.
So to get the deal on what's up with Dantonio's bum-rushing the southeastern Michigan area, the U. decided to contact our boy Josh Helmholdt, who writes about Michigan football recruiting for rivals.com.
"Starting off with Norman was a signal that
MSU is ready to make some noise in this state," Helmholdt said. "They're going after the top kids in the state. They're getting the top kids in and they're buying into what Dantonio is selling."
Dantonio has had several early Junior Days up at East Lansing, and apparently, participants are coming away impressed with the way the second-year coach is doing things.
And don't discount the coaching transition at Michigan, which has gotten off to a late start in procuring talent for the Class of 2009.
Maybe the U.'s got to learn the words to the
MSU fight song.
Nah."
I sent him the lyrics of the fight song. Perhaps I'm just a big

drinker, but i think he'll need to learn it soon.
