I'm actually surprised MI had that many.
Seems like this state is on the upswing for football talent.

I've heard some expert opinons in the past that southern states produce more talent per capita because the warmer climate allows more strenuous year-round outdoor training. Makes sense I guess.

No states more than Georgia at 158 except for CA 347, FL 358 and TX 378- talk about uneven! I'd like to see numbers per population, FL must be off the charts! I wonder why.
Should be a good indicator to Spartan fans who want to compete at the highest level- even Ohio is better than twice the recruiting grounds as Michigan and OSU has no peer in-state. It's just an inherent disadvantage that we have that will never change. Better than a lot of schools, though.

Sure instate talent helps but you can build a program without a lot.
Here are two states that shocked me:
Nebraska 10 (perhaps I am living in the past)
Wisconsin 12
West Virginia 5
seems like you can have a solid program without a tremendous amount of instate talent.

60 players from Michigan, and Corey Johnson, the #13 player in state, top 50 WR nation wide, wasn't one of them,
Ironic.

His stock went up because of all the offers he got to try and lure in his brother. Corey wasn't all he was made out to be. In addition to that, his grades were poor, and they never got any better.

Michigan: Meet Stephen Schilling and Carson Butler. They’re the reason why the cupboard isn’t bare for Rich Rodriguez. Carson Butler is the next Bennie Joppru. And Stephen Schilling is…a right tackle, I can’t do this. The Wolverines are in danger of a 5-7 season. And if you’re a hater? It’s beautiful.

Solid, yes. But, top tier, I don't know. UM would have to be your best argument for that. They don't take that many Michigan kids and when our program is up and our program is a draw, I think they take even less.
But, you look around the country at the national championship contenders, they're generally set in fertile recruiting grounds. You have situations like WV, but they'd kind of sneak into the NC game, they don't go through the gauntlet of the SEC, the PAC 10, the Big 12... Last year, it seemed even OSU snuck into the championship game, I don't think anyone had them as the top team in the country.
Nebraska may be gone for good (as an elite program). That may have been a Tom Osbourne thing. Bama is back, they compete in-state with Auburn but have Florida close by. Georgia is back- fertile recruiting grounds. The florida teams, USC, Texas... generally, where the players are, that's where the elite are. For us to compete for a national championship someday, our coaches will have to work harder and do more with less. I think it's just good to know this kind of thing.

I agree. Maybe my expectations aren't that high for the football team but I would love to see our program be on par with Wisconsin.

Yeah, that certainly seems attainable. The question I have is, what would it take to unseat UM as the top program in the state?

I think it needs an up-to-date context. Do you think the kids nowadays are going to take to driving around in brand new Oldsmobiles?

Scout.com interviewed Johnson after the 07 season, and he admitted that ZERO, THAT'S RIGHT ZERO SCHOOLS HAD OFFERED HIM. Schools offered Corey during his junior year so that they could have a shot at Rojo, remember how Coach D pulled his schollie?
