Keep in mind you are talking about a school that has never won a national championship in basketball or in any major sport.

Uh, I was smack dab in the middle of the Illinois student section, and that's just not true. There were quite a bit of Illinois fans (myself included) wearing green under our orange. I consider the "GO GREEN/GO WHITE" round between the Illinois and Michigan State fans one of the cooler things I've experienced at a sporting event. I also thought it was pretty awesome when our band played your fight song and you guys were all on your feet.

If thats true, You guys are alright.
As far as Buckner goes Illinois is the home state and he has already committed to Illinois so clearly advantage Illinois. However, if he is giving lists and taking visits I think fans of those schools who are on that list and getting those visits should be talking about him. I also think as long as this is the case Illini fans should concede there is good reason to worry and those other fans have good reason to talk. It just works better than sticking your head up your ass and laughing. Talking about IJ not you IA

Sounds like you're the one new to recruiting top prospects! This isn't "odd", it's the norm these days. You guys got a decommit from Iowa, Illinois got a couple of those last year. Juice Williams committed to Illinois, but still took a visit to Ohio St. Most of the time an early commit is a "reservation" while they look around. Illini fans have been on pins and needles about a bunch of recruits, a lot of the top guys don't even decide until signing day. Many Illini fans are not used to this, it's true. But Zook has been able to land his share and I'm not worried about Chicago kids, especially ones being coached by a former Illini player.
BTW, "limited recruiting successes"? Huh? Then why do I read about all the cheating allegations here if Illinois hasn't been successful in recruiting?

It's the norm? Maybe for kids you're recruiting. Kind of tells you something about the BS your coach is selling.

Sorry guy. Kids do commit and take other visits, but very rarely if EVER do they give a Top 3 list This may be typical of Illinois recruits, but MSU recruits don't commit unless they want to be there. Is this really how ****ed up Illini recruiting has become? It's not the norm. Not even close.
Limited recruiting success = not a very long history of pulling in decent classes. The 2006-2007 classes after a 2-9/2-10 seasons were the best classes that Illinois has had in the all the time I've followed recruiting (10+ years). They aren't known for recruiting well at all.

Not really worried about that, he'll sign with Illinois. If not, it's a position Illinois is very deep at and has Terry Hawthorne and Jarred Fayson coming on board next season, too.

latest from Buckner. Will visit Michigan State and Wisconsin for fun. Maybe Tennessee, maybe Arizona. Still solid to Illinois, will only switch if there's a coaching staff turnover. Actively recruiting others to Illinois.

So according to this breaking news, absolutely nothing has changed. In summary: He commited to Illinois and tells others about it while visiting other schools and coaches.

This is great comedy! "for fun" Yeah, when I'm thinking about taking trips just for fun I think about Michigan and Wisconsin. If the dude is wanting to strictly take his officials just for the trip, then he'd be visiting Florida and Southern California. He's solid yet he continues to say he's a "soft" verbal. Trying to convince the opposition that he's a solid verbal is not going to make him a solid verbal Illini fans. He's committed to Illinois, but he's keeping an awfully open mind and making sure something else doesn't look better....we all know this.

I will say visiting MSU and the new facilities will be fun for the young man . If i was an illini fan i would be a little cautious of what is going on with this young man but trust him that he just wants to go on visits for fun and take it all in. However, if he does not reaffirm his commitment to Illinois inbetween the last official visit and the bowl games, then he is gone IMO

I'm committed to Illinois still," Buckner said. "Everything is still real solid with them. I'd like to take some official visits for fun though. Nothing is going to change my mind

Doesn't sound "soft" to me. But keep dreamin'!
He's a smart kid, get a few free trips, see some good college football games, have a good time.

When he's interviewed by an Illini guy, of course he's going to say he's coming blah blah blah or else it sounds bad and coaches get upset, etc. I'd be very nervous on the weekend he visits EL though. I could care less though honestly, it just amazes me how many of you have come over and tried to convince us. What is the point? We'd love to have him, but he'd just be another cherry on top. We've got 8 four stars coming in, it's not like we're trying to grasp for straws. I

Just think when he comes here for fun maybe it will be fun to commit here. Maybe it will be fun to do a interview with Hondo outside of Spartan Stadium talking about why he changed his mind. Maybe it would be fun if he was wearing one of Hondo's Spartan Nation shirts. It is all just for fun of course.
