Committed to OSU today as their seventh DB in the class, and they're going to take two more. Bottom line, Tressel is trying to screw Dantonio. There's no other logic to explain NINE defensive backs in one class.

I don't know about the others, but I know someone like Brown is considered an athlete who can play more positions than DB.

Split with Corners and Safeties and maybe a WR or 2?
Still is crazy. Sucks they have so many schollies to give.
Maybe they don't have room for Klatt or Spiker

He said that they want him at CB. In Justin Green's article last night, he also said that they want him at CB. Either of these two could've easily played offense (unlike the first three DBs they took, who are all definitely DBs), but the OSU staff wants them at DB. McDougal could play either safety or corner. They also want EJ Banks (OSU insiders on the record that OSU will hold a spot for him) at DB, and McGee (also will have a spot per insiders) is definitely a DB. Vlad Emilien is a pure safety, and although no insiders have said a spot will be held for him, they have acknowledged that there's no way in hell OSU pulls his offer because he's visiting in July with his best friend, Jaamal Berry, who happens to be OSU's all-or-nothing RB recruit (and a Buckeye lean). Add it up, and OSU will most definitely take nine DBs in this class.

No way in hell do they have room for Klatt or Spiker. Hell, they wouldn't even have room if Orlando Pace wanted to come back and was granted eligibility by tNCAA.

Just an off the wall thought- Do you think its a possibility he's loading up on DB's partially as a response to UM's new offense and the continued expansion in general of the spread in the Big Ten? I'm not trying to be arrogant and say Tressel is so concerned with RR that he's changing his entire recruiting strategy, but with UM, Illinois running the spread and PSU telling recruits that is the direction they are trying to go (not to mention lesser programs like Purdue and NW running the spread) I wonder if Tressel at least partly is responding to the spread and the likelihood of needing 5 DB's on the field an awful lot.
Thoughts?

Didn't WVU run much more than pass under Rod? I know it's a spread, but it's much more run-oriented than the typical spread seen throughout college football. But that said, you have a point. Still, nine DBs in one class is a little over the top.

It's definitely more run oriented, but I think they still try and spread it out and don't really use lumbering blocking TE's.

Considering that both Illinois and UofM are running spreads that seem to be ground game heavy, why would they load up on DBs?

No.
Too many still. Needs some fast LBs. But still too many corners or safeties to play. I would have to look at their roster for 2009 for total DBs on scholarship. Has to be crazy.

My first reaction was no way would he do this but after thinking about it I wouldn't be surprised if this has some truth to it. Some of those DB's will grow into small fast LB's too. Tressel isn't dumb but you can never tell if coaches can adapt to the changes in the game. Looks like Tressel is trying to stay ahead of the curve.

It's probably because we'll be losing a bunch of defensive backs in the next two years.

Again, and I don't claim to have an extensive knowledge of the spread RR runs, but my understanding was they still spread you out and use in general smaller quicker guys.

Ok, but taking 9 in one class just seems way extreme if you value class balance.

We won't be taking nine IMO.
We have Barnett and Clarke as true cornerbacks. We have Wood and McDougald as true safeties. Justin Green and Corey Brown are athletes. Brown can play corner and safety, where as Green can play offense.
We'll take Emilien IMO. We maybe hold a spot for McGee(not Banks). We take at most 8 players who can play defensive back, no more.

If you look at OSUs roster, they are possibly losing 12 DBs in the next 3 years (We're not far behind that number with 11) - 4 (2008), 4 (2009) and 4 (2010), I can understand why they would load up now. Gives them a ton of time to build up these kids, and it provides options and depth for the upcoming seasons. Also didn't a couple of OSUs returning DBs have some team issues? (Thought I read an article about that somewhere a few months ago) If so, they could be trying to stack up to replace those kids. Just a thought.

Bill Kurelic is on the record that a spot WILL be held for Banks. Emilien's coming too, so that's at least eight. If McGee wants to come, I doubt they would turn a shoulder to the guy who would be the best of 'em all.

The 6'1 and 6'2 guys will be converted to speedy OLBs to counter spread Os. . . . so maybe factor that into your ##.

I think Kurelic is wrong. EJ Banks is a good player, but he's not that good. If he's really planning on taking all five visits, then I don't think there will be spot left for him, regardless of what Kurelic says.

They are going to have one hell of a special teams group. Maybe they can lateral to each other each play?

taking 4 defensive backs is pretty par for the course....if you take 4 guys every year, and lose 4 every year, whats the big deal
