Rivals - "Green Sprints to the Top 100" - $
Visited MSU and Indiana during spring break. Wants to wait to make a decision. No favorites yet.
...but I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Louisville.

This kid would be a MONSTER pickup for the Spartans. He could probably start at corner from Day 1 and be a star in green and white.

I'm not taking anything away from the kid, but to start as a true freshman at CB, or any position on the team? Not likely.

I know nothing about this kid other then what I see on here. With that said, Cornerback is one of the rare positions where athletic ability trumps everything and it is possible to start as a true Frosh.

A lot of CBs start as true freshmen. Chris L. Rucker got quite a few starts until his eye injury.
I'm gonna say actually that CB is the most common position for a true Frosh to start. After that there are a few mammoth DTs who start as true frosh, but its a severe drop off.
Basically only an elite player can start as a true frosh, and there has to be a severe lack of depth/this kid is super legit for someone to start from day 1.
For instance, Johny Adams could crack the starting lineup, Tyler Hoover also has a shot. Fred Smith could be a dark horse. No one else in the '08 class will start, and most will redshirt.

pretty funny since atleast a hundred true freshmen seem to start at every different position for div 1 schools every year.
but you're right we've had such a wealth of talent at cb over the years.
Chris L Rucker and Adams are a nice start but if it's one thing msu desperately needs its corner backs that can actually make a play on the ball well it's in the air.

I don't know what it says about him on Rivals or Scout, but he won the KY HS 100M last year with a 10.67. That's a very good time, especially for a DB.
He'd be a great get, that's for sure.
I also saw where his brother went to tOSU, but the guys on their boards don't think they have room for him.

I agree, Jones was an abnormality. He played great.
So, Chris L and Adams are going to be there and are highly touted. I just didn't agree with the assessment that a freshman was going to come in and immediately start at CB. That said, I am hoping our program gets to the point where a freshman never has to start except in the case of an injury.

freshman will always earn starting spots even if we become USC.
Last year, USC started 1 freshman at center, 1 freshman at RB (I think), and 1 at WR. Plus they may have started some on D, I'm not sure I don't follow that closely.
Even UM started a frosh at DB (Warren, I think).
No matter how big MSU gets, freshman, if they are good enough, will always take the jobs if they are better

I know this much, Charles Woodson started as a freshmen at scUM. You want the program to get to the point where freshmen don't NEED to start. However, you also hope the program gets to the point where it attracts those amazing talents that MERIT starting as freshmen.

Regarding OSU and not having enough room...
How many slots do they have left? How many recruits are we competing for with them?

They're taking the full 25, may take one or two over that. Which means about 10 spots left. We're competing with them for at least 10...

People basically cleared up what I meant from the start. Of course we want to be loaded enough to not be able to start true freshmen very often. However, we aren't quite there yet. The talent level is skyrocketing under MD for sure, but a Top 100 player at the corner position...start him from Day 1. Reason I say that is because for years we've needed better DBs and now that they are coming in, I'd love to see the wave of talented youth play immediately.
Johnny Adams on one side and Green on the other...woooweee

I know dorsey said that but I dont buy it. They're at the 85 limit with 20 scholarship seniors and 15 2009 commits already. That means presently they have 5 more to give.
taking a full 25 means assuming 5 kids leave the program, which you cant justifiably assume. Plus tressel has been known to reward a walk-on or two.
2010 is also a great year in ohio and michigan and it wouldn't be a bad idea for tressel to save a couple seeing as how they only have 17 scholarship seniors in 2009

i dont think tressel cares about saving a couple for next year. he picks them out all across the country

We're probably taking the full 25. I'm almost one hundred percent positive that Chris Wells will be leaving early. I'm also fairly certain Lawrence Wilson will leave early provided he doesn't get injured again and plays up to his potential. That's two additional scholarships opening up. There could be a surprise player or two in the secondary(very likely since it appears we're loading up on defensive backs this year | | |
