Questions for recruiting people

it looks like we are running out of high quality players in Michigan and now starting to reach for lower quality guys. Anyone pick up on this? Is there anyway we can recruit so this doesn't happen in the future?

I say we start recruiting nationally.

Recruiting nationally is easier said than done. For one thing, that's a lot of time at the airports for a lot of meetings that will result in nothing more than butt kissing. Our coaches did a lot to lure Yourhighness from Florida Atlantic or whoever that was, and they couldn't do it. One of our prized recruits, Trawick, was like the no. 50 player in GA, etc., etc.,

One draw on the local kids, it develops the local fanbase. It makes more fans in Michigan as communities follow the local boy who did good. It probably sells more MSU trademark clothing and everything down the line, too.

But yes, there comes a point when we have to branch out. Considering the state of our program right now, we'll do well to get the best MI and OH talent we can. The rest is just icing, I believe.

It's a schtick people.

With that being said, I'm still really really hoping we get Gordon, Gainer, Matthias, Chapman, Jackson, Farrington, Benton, and maybe a couple other in-staters. We're not going to have room for all of them because were in on some very good prospects from Ohio and a few other states who already have offers (Only Gordon and Matthias currently do).

Tough to do. Its not like we can go into California, Texas or Florida and take their top recruits. We would be taking their severe left overs.

I think the ideal build to a recruiting class is this. Start out with a foundation of Michigan players (Which we are doing now). This will help build our relationships across the state and then when there are pretty open kids, we should be able to beat U of M out for these guys. Then hopefully we can start stringing 3 to 4 winning seasons together and then start to compete in Ohio harder. Right now we are getting beat out by Illinois and Michigan for Ohio recruits. If we put together 4 solid seasons together we can start to get the first leftovers in Ohio. Once this happens we hopefully can have a few seasons with the upper tier Big Ten and then at that time beat OSU for an Ohio recruit. Very tough but that would be the time where we would be able to do it.

At that time, then we can start to branch out maybe to Texas and Florida. Although we are still trying to attack these parts and we may get a guy like Hyder. I think getting a guy like Frankie Telfort is unrealistic at this point.

As far as getting lower quality Michigan players, I don't think we are reaching for lower quality Michigan players at this stage. I think a guy like Gainer would be an excellent addition to this team. I am not in love with having a monster Michigan class. Currently we have 6 commits from the state. I would like to see 9-10 guys from Michigan wind up in this class (Assuming Farrington can get his grades in order).

The other 6-7 we should try and get from Ohio, Illinois and maybe try and reach out to the east coast.

Wrong board wolvie. BTW congrats on picking up the 2009 version of Carl Grimes.
