he was not serious with the 5 star comment (at least I hope he was joking).

So how many games did this kid miss last year? From that video and his measurables I would think this kid would be rated higher. What other offers did he have?

Has good size, good speed, good athleticism. A high 2 star presently but will probably be a 3 star. Was the DII state champion in the long jump as a junior with a jump of 22'5.25. Made the semi's in the 100 with a FAT time of 11.05 (essentially he was the number 8 or 9 sprinter in DII - good to very good speed, not exceptional).

He definitely has the hook and ladder down. Now lets see if he can run the Statue of Liberty or Fumblerooski.

Jeremy Crabtree wrote an article for the national Rivals.com site on July 9th and listed 10 players who, based on their summer camps performances, he expected to accelerate through the star ranking system the next time they are released. Combine this with the fact that Bennie has only played one year of football and I think you have the makings of an "elite lever sleeper." We got one last year in keyshawn Martin and it looks like has struck again.

I think he could end up a very high 3 star with a potential to be a 4 star with a great senior season

Yeah I suspect that. I don't give much love to the star system, but I think he'll get a really good rating. He missed a lot of time and probably fell through the cracks because of it. I think more "experts" will be taking a look at him now because of his commitment and he has his entire senior season to show off his skills.

He also is a late bloomer because he did not play football for the first two years of high school. Rather, he focused on track and basketball. He's got a little brother who is a hell of a basketball player too.
DCDS doesn't air it out all that often so don't be concerned if his stats aren't mind blowing. The kid is a talent and I'm sure they will get him more involved in the offense this upcoming season.

Also, this commitment is consistent with Coach Dantonio's preference for players with position flexibility. ND was looking at Bennie as a DB & WR so there is always the possibility that Bennie may get a look on the defensive side of the ball.

Here is a little more information courtesy of Sam Webb's Article on July 3rd:
Country Day's Fowler among state's rising stars
Bennie Fowler, WR, Detroit Country Day, 6-foot-1.5/185 pounds/4.36 in 40: Jonas Gray (Notre Dame) and Kenny Demens (Michigan) got most the ink last year for the Yellow Jackets, but had Bennie Fowler been healthy the entire season, his name would have been right up there also.
"The first couple of games I played well," Fowler said. "I scored a couple of touchdowns. Then on a punt return in the homecoming game I broke my collarbone. I sat out like eight or nine weeks."
Fowler made it back for the state semifinals, during which he scored the winning touchdown. He followed that up with a seven-catch performance in the state final. That was enough to spur offers from Indiana, Toledo and Eastern Michigan. His recruitment went into overdrive, however, after he attended the Michigan State camp in late June and ran a blazing 4.36 in the 40. The Spartans offered the next day. Now Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten (except for Ohio State) are showing interest in this raw but talented prospect. Scout.com Stock Report rating: Up from NR to No. 27.

You know, with a good senior season, a four star ranking may not be out of the question (and certainly not a three star)...not that it matters.
Take a look at the comparison between James Jackon ( James Jackson - Football Recruiting) and Fowler ( Bennie Fowler - Football Recruiting)
In summary:
James Jackson, Grand Ledge
tOSU commit - Four Star (per rivals)
6'0" 175 4.31 / 40
Bennie Fowler, Detrout Country Day
MSU commit - Two Star (per rivals)
6'2" 185 4.36 / 40
Now consider that both missed big parts of the season last year due to injury.
Please note, by me posting this comparison, I am saying that Fowler is as good as Jackson (I have never seen Fowler play, but I have Jackson), but there are some means to compare, at least the attributes, and those measures are very close.

Watching that tape, I was a little concerned about the way he carries the ball in the open field (in one hand, completely unprotected), but I guess if you run away from all the defenders, you can carry the ball however you want.
I look forward to seeing Bennie in the green and white!

Ted Ginn would have scored on that play.
That being said, Fowler will be a 4 star.
Great speed, catches with his hands. Two great attributes for a WR.
Welcome to MSU Bennie.

Amazing.
Not that Fowler verballed to Dantonio, but the fact that a player with a 2-star ranking is being so warmly received by RCMB members. Usually a 2-star rated player who verbals to MSU would be met with a volley of posts claiming he is a MAC level talent.
Are posters now more confident in the this staffs ability to judge talent than in past years?
Glad this young man wants to be a part of Dantonio's program. He obviously passed the rigid evaluation process that this staff has set for recruits. They are being very selective due to low scholarship numbers, and Fowler was one they targeted regardless of star rating.

It's not fair to compare anyone to Ted Ginn. You don't have to be Ted Ginn to be a good player, not that you were saying you do.
I agree that Fowler seems underrated at the moment, but I'm not sure he will jump all the way to 4 stars.
I'm excited about this commitment.

Looks like a solid prospect.
I say 3* (5.5 or 5.6) seems about right. Possibly a 5.7 if he blows up this fall

I think timing matters. Taking a 2 star in July is a lot different than taking a 2 star in February.

I think tRCMB is making progress, when I first saw his rating, my heart kind of dropped, I had really hoped for Cameron Gordon, but after seeing this guy's film and his measurables, I'm excited.
