He's a little bit short for TE. I think with his measurables he'd project at LB.

Hammock is not being recruited as a DE or TE (doesn't have the height or frame for those positions) ! He is being recruited strictly as a MLB which is a real need. If he commits, he will be the final LB recruit in the 2009 class. In any event, the only LB spot that will be filled now is going to be a MLB, since State already has Chris Norman @ OLB.
Figuring State has 18 scholarships (with 10 already committed) for 2009, this looks like the Position breakdown for the balance of the class : MLB - 1, CB - 1, WR - 1, TE - 1, OL - 2, DL - 2.

I think is looking for athletes that can potentially play multiple positions.

After tearing up the June camp as a defensive lineman, Treadwell will begin his career @ MSU on defense @ the "three technique" DT (where current Senior Justin Kershaw plays). DL Coach Ted Gill is happy to have Treadwell on the defensive side of the ball and getting him away from OL Coach Dan Roushar in a friendly rivalry.
As a Freshman in 2009 on defense Patrick White could very well be the "Nickel" CB with starting CB's Chris Rucker and Johnny Adams. White could be a good WR but he might become a great cover CB.

you totally missed the point.
We all know that is their primary positions they were recruited at, but EMSP is saying that it is not a stretch at all to switch them if the need arises or if necessity sets in. His point is they are athletes first who have a set position but can be flexible

Except that Hammock can't really play any other position. Too small to play TE or DE, not fast enough to play safety. He's one of the rare few in this class than can't play multiple positions. NTTAWWT. He's going to be a very good MLB for somebody someday.

Linebackers really aren't recruited as "athletes" like a Pat White or a Blake Treadwell.
We need a stud linebacker next to Norman and this guy is it. There is no point taking him and making him a TE and trying to find another LB.
We have offered Vushaj and he will commit probably before the end of the summer. So there is your TE. A guy who is way more natural at the position any ways.
Watch Hammock's film and you will be very impressed. He is going to be a great MLB for somebody and hopefully it is us.

Are he and Barnett serious about IU? I'd LOVE to derail the Believe Train by pulling two instate studs like this. Any idea if they have any sort of a timeline? And how would you compare Hammock & Gainer?

Player comparison; Hammock vs. Gainer : Both players are currently ranked with 3*'s. Both players are about the same size, @ 6' 1", about 220 lbs. Gainer has a faster 40 time @ 4.56 seconds vs. Hammock @ 4.7 seconds. Gainer plays Safety in HS and is projected to OLB in college. Hammock is projected to MLB.
Hammock has offers from Michigan State, Miami of Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, Northern Illinois, and Northwestern. Other schools of interest are Iowa, Purdue, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Toledo, and Notre Dame (where he recently camped and is hoping for an offer). He is scheduled to attend MSU's July camp. He is one of the priority recruits for MSU because he can play MLB and that will be the last LB position for the 2009 class.

Good info.
I'd love to come out of this weekend with Hammock and Barnett as verbals.

If Hammock doesn't commit this weekend or shortly after, I don't think we get him.

I'd be surprised if Hammock committed any time soon. I've read that he is waiting on a ND offer. I have no idea how true that is but I've read it in a couple of different places

He and Barnett are making an unofficial visit to EL in a couple weeks.

Barnett's latest updates sound like they really want to play together. Is ND even considering Barnett? If not, it looks very unlikely that Hammock would go that route without Barnett being able to follow.

Not sure where you heard the news that Barnett is coming up here with Hammock for an unofficial. Possibly the Scout article but I don't have access to that site.
If that is true I would put the odds at about 70% that Barnett verbals during that visit.
As for IU, they are a factor but like some of their fans say. Ft. Wayne kids tend to like to go outside the state.
