Recruiting ? on Vontae Davis from 06 class
I remember when Vontae was down to MSU and Illinois and the night before he was going to decide he said that he was leaning towards MSU. But on signing day he signed with Illinois. I swear I remember hearing that he called to commit to MSU and they told him they no longer had a spot for him (they had given Rod Jenrette the last DB schollie on the weekend). Does anyone else remember this story or no?
It sucks in general that we couldn't get V. Davis in a spartan uniform. Hes one hell of a corner!!!

Hold up. Tinney had some serious potential - remember he was offered a scholie by UM.
He might have been a nutcase who couldn't stop breaking the law, but he did have serious potential

When did Tinney have issues with the law? He didn't want to work, skipped classes, and basically just slacked off when he got here. I don't remember any off the field incidents with him.

I thought he had legal problems, I must be remembering someone else, my bad.
Point is though, he was offered by UM and other schools, he wasn't a longshot recruit we took over Davis

They were saying that we took Ken Tinney in that class and that's why we didn't take Davis. We could have a lot of threads talking about guys that JLS missed out on.

Hindsight is fun. It should be a main focus of discussion boards, since we're not burdened with being the coaches. I highly encourage more threads like this.
Having been second-guessed as a coach for a few years, it's so cool being on the other side for a change.
In a way, these threads are kind of addictive.

They should probably happen on the main board though along with threads about upcoming freshmen though. This board is about current (2009+) recruiting.
Vontae Davis was a player that a lot of us wanted. We never heard the stories on why he picked Illinois, but I suspect that a lot of the reason was more Locksley than us taking Tinney. Especially when Tinney committed to MSU a month before Davis committed to Illinois.

actually Vontae Davis said on signing day it came down to Maryland and Illinois. MSU was 3rd.
