osu took:
3 defensive backs in the '06 class
5 defensive backs in the '07 class
1 defensive back in the '08 class
4 defensive backs in the '09 class
almost all of those defensive backs are 4 star guys or better and they also have some 5 star guys who are listed as athletes and might be playing defensive back as well. I think the '07 and '09 classes are going to make it pretty crowded down there but thats not to say he still won't or couldn't go there though. I hope he chooses MSU and
I think OSU cashed in on the talent in years they could get it and now they are pretty stocked up at that position. I bet they will take one more guy for sure and after that it is a flip of a coin.

tOSU apparently only has 6 offers left, and they have needs at DT (2), and brought in 3 CB's last class. They also need another OL or 2. Numbers are tight for Tressel. Most of the depth in that program is true FR or RS FR, and they need a P too.
|
Knowing this it makes you wonder if Tressell, based on his realationship & mutual respect for MD would ever tell this kid, "Ya know what? We'd love to have you play for us in Columbus, but there's a great opportunity for you up the road in East Lansing."
If there's one coach in America Tressell would do this for, it would be Dantonio.

i would have to think that Tressell will continue to sell his program like he always has but just wont say anything bad about MSU. thats probably the mutual relationship they both have. i dont think OSU will put on the full court press until they know what will happen with Joyner

While I can certainly see Tressel recommending us to a player he is no longer after there is no way he is telling a kid that he wants what a great opportunity MSU is for him.

With some of the Big 10 teams, you may need 5+ defensive backs on the field at any given time.

tOSU took 3 CB's and 1 S in the last class. Current roster shows them losing 1 CB and 3 S after this season and they have 4 FR class CB's (1 a redshirt) and 3 FR class S (2 a redshirt) on the current roster.
Current tOSU roster shows a total of 3 CB's and 3 S in the SO and JR classes.
Of the 5 DB recruits from the 2006 class, 2 were converted to other positions.
Of the 5 DB recruits from the 2007 class, 1 is no longer with the program.
They have 13 players using up eligibility after this season, and 3 departures from the program, so they have 16 spots, and 10 are spoken for.
tOSU has 6 DT's on scholarship and 2 leave after this season, they will have to use 2 offers to replace those losses, unless they move someone.
Their verbals are confusing, they have 2 DE's and 3 LB's committed for 2010, after taking 3 DE's and 3 LB's in 2009. Their depth chart at both positions is much better than their depth chart at DB, which is not a good sign for us landing Bryant, but only having 6 spots left and multiple positions to address is.

First off what a truly insightful post from you, looks like you are trying to raise your post count robin.
Secondly that is NOT what he said. He said Tressell would tell the kid even though we'd love to have you there is a GREAT opportunity up the road for you. Ummm, no. While there is much love Tressel is still looking out for numero uno. And here is the exact quote in case you are too dumb to connect the dots robin.
"would ever tell this kid, "Ya know what? We'd love to have you play for us in Columbus, but there's a great opportunity for you up the road in East Lansing."

Ohio State only categorizes players in 3 ways - Power, speed, and big speed. You will find this over at Buckeye Planet and it is how Tressel recruits. Certainly there are exceptions (QB, kickers), but they pretty much try to meet number in those categories, not by position.
Just a few examples....
Ted Ginn was a CB prospect, moved to WR
Chris Gamble was a WR, of course played both ways but ended up at CB
Worthington was a DE who is now a DT
and to a few other points, Baldwin is certainly a candidate for DT. OSU did get a kicker this year, and a punter is not a must have (lose 1, but have another guy listed as a kicker but does both kicking and punting...many feel he will be a punter). They offered Hagerup, but if he does not accept I doubt they go after another punter. Finally, OSU always loses about 2-4 players to transfers. Those normally do not happen until the end of the season. So even though 16 is the number right now you can bet it will be 18-20 by signing day.
So despite everything that has been said I don't think Bryant will be a numbers casualty for OSU. Just wishful thinking IMO.

To somewhat contradict my last post and give hope to the numbers people, Joshua Shaw recently declared OSU his leader. I doubt it will happen, but if OSU gets both Shaw and LeMarcus Joyner then the number do get a lot tighter in the speed area. Both Shaw and especially Joyner are national recruits that any team in the country would love to have (both have been offered by essentially every team in the country). If both Shaw and Joyner commit to OSU (again I doubt it happens) then you might see Bryant a numbers casualty. Slim might. Although you can pretty much chalk up LaTwan Anderson to not getting an OSU offer unless both of the studs fall through, and even then I am not sure he gets an offer.
edit: On a personal note, I think that FSU gets Joyner. OSU is banking on Bryant as a lock and then adding Shaw (Although I don't think Shaw is anywhere near a lock). With James Louis committing the speed area is getting tight so I highly doubt Anderson sees an offer. Of course even though a verbal commit I am not sure Louis is actually a lock.
Really only 3 speed guys left in OSU's class (4 if Louis decommits), and way more than that interested. 4 may be a good number depending on transfers with Shaw, Louis, Joyner, Bryant, Williams, and Brown all strong possibilities. I would be surprised if 5 of them are in OSU's class (although 5 are verbal or leader, and Joyner has OSU tied with FSU per his reports).

Keion Payne from FLA has cut his list down to 5 and OSU is one of them.

There is a question as to whether OSU actually offered him. According to BP, Bill Greene at Scout says he does not have an OSU offer. He in no way would be taken ahead of Bryant.
Shaw and Joyner are part of the very few that could push out Bryant.

OSU is not well known for package deals, especially in a really small class.
Besides, if that was the case wouldn't they have already offered? If it's a throw away schollie to get Joyner why not offer and get it over with? Unless of course the information is incorrect.

we have plenty of time to wait and see what happens. but the recruitment of hankins has conflicting scholarship offer information as well for OSU

Top five of MSU, OSU, Tenn, Ill. and UNC. MSU, OSU and Tenn. are locks to get official visits. UVA has a chance to get into his top five and he will make his decision after his season.

Not really related to recruiting and pretty bland but he's blogging about his season in the Plain Dealer.
Quote:
It's the first day of the week.
The team and I have to have an awesome week of practice. We know how much this upcoming game against St. Ignatius on Saturday means for our season.
But my teammates and I take it as another obstacle on our road to glory! So we're just going to stay focused and disciplined in practice so we can come out this game victorious.

still behind tOSU as of 9/7/09.. MSU will be one of his 3 "for sure" official visits along with tOSU and Tenn..
per rivals.. http://ohiostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=985291
Going to USC/OSu game, which could be bad or good depending on the outcome.. Also, for those who do not know, he is teammates with 5* LaTwan Anderson..
Heres another article on him..
http://ohiostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=983310
On MSU- "I went there for a camp and they just showed me a lot of love and I really just lived it up and enjoyed my moment down at Michigan State. I actually like Michigan State a lot and their coaching staff."

I wont hold my breath, but Bryant, Lewis, Mathis, Hicks (or 3 of them) would be an awesome DB class.

So we have our safeties. Is Bryant a corner?

Yes, I just don't think our odds are good on either. Bryant seems to like us, but in all likelyness will end up a Buckeye. Mathis is a little bit more tricky, but at the moment I would say we sit at 4 out of his top 4.
