Football Fantasy Football

This is my first time ever doing this. I have a draft tonight.

Does anyone have or know where i can get a list of suggested draft order. I have found lists of players by postion but i dont know who to draft when.. as in when to switch from a RB to WR, from WR to QB.

OR what order to draft in i assume you get RB first, THen WR then QB then Def. (??)

so if anyone has a list or link to a site that has a list of all pos. 1 through whatever.. MUCH APPRECIATED.

Go to footballguys.com pay the $20 fee for a membership and download an updated "draft dominator"

put your draft order, point system, and roster requirements into the program, then it will it will draft for you. You can deviate from the programs suggestion as you see fit, but it will guide your selections.

This program is the bomb.

I won my league last year, which included taking BHB's money, using this program.

Thanks for introducing me to it BHB

I recommend the draft analyzer at www.myfantasyleague.com. Select 2005, then select drafts conducted after August 25 to get the latest info. This will provide the average draft position from about 500 drafts. Unless your league has funky scoring rules, this is about as good as it gets. It's free!

From fantasyfootballjungle.com:

Finally we reach the pinnacle of this series. To the (literally!) dozens of people who have read the articles, and the thousands who haven’t but may have accidentally clicked the links at one point or another, this is the “Cliff’s Notes” version of the previous five articles. I’m going to go round-by-round through the first five rounds of a fantasy draft and suggest what position to take, and why. Is it generalizing? Yes, of course. But this is the basic strategy I feel you should go into a draft with, which can then be modified as the draft progresses. Note that this strategy is independent of your player rankings. Nowhere in this series have I told you which players to draft, just which positions; and that won’t be any different here. It’s my opinion that if you follow this strategy with reasonable player rankings (how about using the cheatsheets found on this site?), your fantasy team will be competitive 9 times out of 10. You may not always get the best team you could have got, but you’ll avoid any complete disasters (at least, ones that could have been avoided—if your first round pick decides that pot is more important than football, there’s really nothing anybody can do). Therefore, I feel this is very valuable to less experienced fantasy owners, and still worth reading for seasoned ones.

The information regarding which players will be available where is from the Average Draft Position tool over at AntSports.com, which is an objective measure of where players are being selected in mock drafts. I’m assuming a 12 team league and P1 (relatively standard) scoring.

Round One – Running Back
In my opinion, running back is the only option. Whether you’re selecting with the first pick or last pick of the round—or somewhere in between—I have a difficult time coming up with a situation in which selecting a running back is not a sound decision. This isn’t because I don’t like Peyton Manning, Daunte Culpepper, or Randy Moss; it’s because I want absolutely nothing to do with the running backs that will be available in the third round and beyond. Remember, that’s where you’ll be selecting your 2nd RB if you opt not to take one in the first round. I’m a firm believer in building your fantasy team around solid running backs, and this year you just cannot do that in most serious leagues unless you take one with your first pick. Sure, if Peyton falls to me at the tenth pick I’d probably take him; but that happens so infrequently that it’s not worth considering. Outside of that or another extraordinary circumstance, running back is the way to go with your first pick.

Round Two – Running Back
Once again, do you really want anything to do with the third round running backs? Unless you’re picking late in the second round and all the backs you like are already gone, I recommend selecting the highest ranked running back on your board with your second round pick. Plenty of quality quarterbacks and wide receivers will be available later on in most drafts, whereas the running back position is usually already razor thin. By taking running backs in the first two rounds, you’ve built a solid backbone for your team; one that should put up consistent points every week, which is the key to being a competitive fantasy team.

Round Three – Wide Receiver
With Manning, Culpepper, and McNabb likely gone, there’s no reason to panic and take a quarterback now. The same quality quarterbacks available now will still be there two rounds from now, so you might as well fill another need. There should be excellent receivers still on the board in the third round, and plenty worthy of the #1 spot on your team. The temptation may be to take one of the top tight ends here, but that would seriously compromise your receiver position (you’d have to take your top two between the fourth and sixth rounds). Given that quality tight ends will be on the board much later on, I believe wide receiver provides much better value.

Round Four – Wide Receiver
Plenty of quarterbacks should still be there, so you can wait another round. This is where you benefit from the guys who don’t have two running backs yet, as they absolutely have to take a running back here (probably one of the rookies). That means that a lot of receivers that should have been selected earlier are going to be there for you to benefit from. Guys like Hines Ward, Nate Burleson, Roy Williams, and Steve Smith are terrific #2 receivers that are usually available in the fourth round. Combine one of those guys with the receiver you got in round 3 (probably from the group of Chad Johnson, Andre Johnson, Joe Horn, Javon Walker, and Reggie Wayne), and you’ve got a fantastic receiving duo without having to use a high pick on either of them.

Round Five – Quarterback
And finally we select our quarterback. The players you’ll have to choose from will depend on what type of league you’re in and where you’re selecting in the round; but in my experience there is always a quality starting quarterback available in the fifth round. Guys like Marc Bulger, Trent Green, Kerry Collins, Brett Favre, Tom Brady are all excellent starters likely to be available. Less knowledgeable owners tend to select quarterbacks early, however, so some or all of those guys may be gone depending on your league. Not to worry, because Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Plummer, Aaron Brooks, Drew Brees, and Jake Delhomme are perfectly fine. Honestly, I’d be happy starting any of those guys if I had excellent RB’s and WR’s, which you should if you followed this strategy. It’s not that these guys are going to put up numbers anywhere near what Manning and Culpepper will; it’s that the difference is made up by the running backs and receivers you’ll get by waiting until now to take your quarterback.

The Rest
After you’ve built your fantasy team’s core, the rest of the players you select will just be window dressing or insurance. I highly recommend selecting a tight end in rounds six or seven, to be sure to get someone from the group of Alge Crumpler, Jason Witten, Todd Heap, Jeremy Shockey, and Dallas Clark. You should also get a backup quarterback and #3 RB within a few rounds. If your league requires 3 wide receivers, obviously that position should move to the top of your list; otherwise I’d take my third receiver in round 9, after taking a TE, RB, and QB. One of the weaknesses of this strategy is that you won’t have great depth at any position, but I believe that’s a worthy sacrifice for having a starting lineup that could win your league. After taking your tight end and backup skill position players, defense becomes your next priority in round 10 or 11, followed by a couple more backup skill position players, and finally a kicker in round 13 or 14. Cap off your draft by selecting sleepers/players from your home team/guys you know from high school.

If you follow this strategy in any 12-team draft, I cannot think of a scenario in which you won’t field a competitive team on paper. Of course, football is largely unpredictable, so injuries/contract issues/drugs could very well bring your star players crashing down. Still, that’s a possibility with any draft strategy, and I feel this general template for drafting is a simple, no-frills way to put yourself in a position to compete for your fantasy league’s title.

Yes. I too made millions with your system, B-H-B. If someone like me, living in my own one room apartment with little money down could win, anyone can!

The only problem w/this site is that they don't have a menu to select the size of your league. I've sent them emails the last 2 years about this and both times they've told me that it was a good idea and they would add it soon.

I just used it the other day for the first time. Hopefully I'll have the same results!

Anyone signed up for the 'RCMB FFL' fantasy leaque - We are going to do a live draft thread here. BEcause of setting the draft so late, its either this way and I input the names onto each team, or auto-pick. I will get a thread started with a format so we can minimize duplicate picks. Teams not here will be assigned the next player on ESPN's top 200.
