Fantasy Hockey Question
Hey...if anybody has ever played fantasy hockey before I need some help. I'm in a league for the first time and I need to know how important it is to carry 3 goalies on the roster or not. Currently I have two. Should I pick up a third?

The way my league is set up, we will have 2 playing at all times so I would definitely pick up a 3rd. If you have a league where you are playing 1 goalie, I would just keep the other one on your bench when you need it, esp. if he's a #1 goalie who will get a lot of playing time.

thats how mine is too. but if you just have 1 goalie playing, i would do the same as she says, if your in a pinch you could probably pull someone decent off waivers, but i would go for 2 good goalies, one being a 2nd pick.

This is my 3rd year in FH --we used to have 2C, 2RW, 2LW, 4D, and 1G to play. This year, the league I'm in has 3C, 3LW, 3RW, 1FW, 4D, 2G. Is this normal? Seems a little excessive to me?

I always carry 3 goalies. Anyone else having a difficult time remembering what team the usual faces are playing for? I'm just now getting used to Forseburg being in PHI, and I cant even tell you where some of the other big names are, even though I've heard them mentioned 10 times.

The league I am in is a head to head league (comparing stat categories like wins, gaa, save percentage, shutouts...). I took 3 goalies in the first 4 rounds trying to make sure that I always win the goalie comparisons by eating up a lot of the good goalies since there is a finite amount of goalies and 20 and 20 skaters are a dime a dozen.
Depending on your scoring system you might want 3.

Yes! It's gotten pretty bad so I made an excel cheatsheet just kind of noting who I wanted to pick up. It should be easier than leafing through a million pages of rosters (yes, I printed out each team roster).

Mine was head to head last year but I don't think that is how it's going this year. Goalies will be my first 2 rounds, but after that I'll probably go for D. Do you think this is this wise?

It depends on how the scoring works, if you get 2 points for a goal and 1 for an assist and then something like +1 or -1 for each +/- point, sometimes defensemen aren't the smartest to draft early. You will want to watch out for powerplay defensemen like Dick Tarnstrom (pittsburgh) who had a high number of assists/points last season, but was something like -37 because they all came on the powerplay. He probably won't have those problems this year because pittsburgh will be pretty good but it's the type of player to watch out for depending on the scoring.
In general though, yes, you will want to pile up defensemen early (or if not early you will want to make sure that you have those starting spots filled before you make sure you have your wing/center spots filled) since there are less of them.
I screwed that up in my draft yesterday, and got stuck taking defensemen late.
1. Evgeni Nabokov
2. Mats Sundin
3. Dominik Hasek
4. Jocelyn Thibault
5. Mike Ribeiro
6. Marian Gaborik
7. Wade Redden
8. Michael Ryder
9. Scott Gomez
10. Daniel Sedin
11. Brian Rafalski
12. John-Michael Liles
13. Tomas Kaberle
14. Mariusz Czerkawski
15. Alexander Frolov
16. Henrik Sedin

Yeah, league like that you want to pile up goalies that are either (a) on the best teams or (b) get a lot of shutouts. They're usually the same guys for both (a) and (b). Then you'll want to go after defensemen since you can find good wingers later in the draft.

Nice. Miller might not be a bad pick up either. I will post my draft results tonight or tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

Good luck. I'm glad we aren't in the same league. I'm a long time hockey fan, but I don't know how to judge fantasy league talent as well as I do real league talent. You seem much better at it than I do.
As far as Miller is concerned, I think I'll hold off until I know for sure he's going to be the starter. Besides, Gerber is playing for a team that plays a defensive minded game. He should have a lot of help in front of him and that will help his numbers.
For what it's worth, here is my current roster.
C- Vincent Lecalier
C- Brendan Morrison
LW- Brendan Shanahan
LW- Sergei Samsonov
RW- Jaromir Jagr
RW- Tony Amonte
W- Miroslav Satan
F- Marc Savard
D- Adrian Aucoin
D- Adam Foote
D- Zdeno Chara
D- Jaroslav Modry
Util- Chris Simon
BN- Brian Rolston
BN- Jochen Hecht
BN- Ray Whitney
BN- Jeff O'Neill
G- Marty Turco
G- Evgeny Nabakov
G- Martin Gerber

Thanks for the props, but I wouldn't go that far. I can research all I want but it comes down to the draft and hoping that the research I read was right on. Your team looks pretty good but I don't know that I am that excited about Shanahan.

I originally didn't think so either, however, I was watching a lot of the preseason games and with the more open play he seems to be getting a lot more room to shoot from inside the face off circles where he can use that awesome wrist shot and he also seems like he's been having more success closer to the net than he did. As long as the play stays as wide open as it has been I'll hold onto him. If it starts clogging, I'm going to release him in a heartbeat.

If nobody picked Alexander Frolov he is a great pickup at left wing. Did you take Nabokov and Vokoun in rounds 1 and 2? Vokoun in 2 is kinda interesting depending on what other goalies were out there at the time. Definately looks like you managed to draft a solid group of defensemen.

good lineup. I like Legwand too. When I was in high school I use to go to Compuware Arena in Plymouth when he used to play for the Hurricanes farm team the Plymouth Whalers. He was AWESOME back then.
