yes. the most important thing in the first round is to get a stud who will not let you down. there hasn't been anyone more consistent than A-rod.

If its a keeper league, you should not take A-Rod. He is not that far ahead of everyone and he is 32 or 33 years old. Miguel Cabrera will put up very similar numbers and is only 24. Look at Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Ryan Howard, David Wright, etc. I would have probably 5-6 guys ahead of A-Rod in a keeper league

Yeah but A-rod isnt' actually declining now, he just will in 3 to 4 years. There's no guarantee the league would even last so long. But his numbers are a lot further ahead than Cabrera, Ramirez, and Wright. Reyes hardly even contributes in 2 categories so he's not even close.
A-rod is the best player in baseball for a reason. And 32 is not exactly old for someone of his caliber. Take him and if it really bothers you down the line, trade him for a younger stud later.

A-Rod wasn't the first pick in last years fantasy drafts you know? Everybody thought Pujols was better last season. I believe Rodriguez was getting drafted about 6th or 7th overall. What I'm saying is.....its not like he is better than everyone else every single year. He just happened to be better in 2007. The odds are it won't happen again. A-Rod is certainly not a bad pick, but I surely would go in another direction if I was picking first overall.

In 2006, A-Rod was ranked 20th overall behind Pujols, R Howard, Reyes, Soriano, Jeter, Ortiz, Holliday, Utley, Berkman, J Dye, Beltran, Vlad, Cabrera, C Lee, Atkins and Carl Crawford. So I would definitely disagree that he is 'the best player in baseball'. It won't happen again. Just like the unanimous top picks in basketball (Kevin Garnett), Football (LT) and baseball 2006 (Pujols) didn't repeat.

I don't really know what leagues you were playing in where A-rod was getting drafted 6th, but last year he was far and away the best player in baseball. And there really isn't any reason to believe he won't be the best player again this year. Considering Pujols' elbow is apparently a time bomb, I'd stick with A-rod.

In any normal keeper league (where you can only keep a guy for 3 years), ARod is the safest pick of anyone. In his worst 3 year stretch since 1998; he still 35 or more homers all 3 seasons; had 20 or more steals twice; had 120 RBI's twice; and never hit worse than .286. If you can anyone who's safer, never been injured, and is still active; name him.

I would love to play against someone who ranked these guys ahead of ARod. It could have been last year, 2 years ago or ten years ago. ARod should never ever be taken after these guys.

He finished the 2006 year with a fantasy ranking worse than those guys! It wasn't an opinion....it was his actual statistics in these 5 categories (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG). 20th place. 2006.
And go look up the 2007 pre-draft baseball rankings. You are completely wrong about A-Rod being considered the best player in baseball before the 2007 season..
In 2007 ESPN had it Pujols, Soriano, A-Rod, Reyes, Johan.
In 2007 Yahoo had it Pujols, Reyes, A-Rod, Soriano, Crawford.
In 2007 CBS had it Pujols, Soriano, A-Rod, Reyes, Johan.
I don't mind people taking A-Rod 1st in a keeper league. I am taking him first in my yearly league. I would think about him 1st in a keeper league but I would probably take Miguel Cabrera or David Wright instead.
But anyone saying that A-Rod was 'far and away' the best player prior to the 2007 season is full of crap

The only reason for people ranking ARod below those or any other players is because off an "off" year in 2006. People thought that he couldn't handle New York and were looking for someone new to proclaim as "the best".

I'd really like to know what Yahoo was smoking. Reyes, who doesn't hit any HRs, RBIs, and has a low average, was ranked second ahead of A-rod? and Crawford (who also hits no HRs, RBI) was ranked 5th?
A-rod contributes in all 5 categories. 3 of them he does very well (HRs, Runs, RBI) and in SB and Average he's still well above average. You don't get that kind of production from anyone with the exception of David Wright and Hanley Ramirez; Ramirez plays for a bad team limiting his numbers, and Wright is great but still doesn't reach A-rod's averages.
I mean, you certainly could convince yourself that Ramirez and Wright are in the neighborhood, and depending on deviations and luck they might be better; but A-rod is still consistently the best option.

And that's the key in a keeper league. With A-Rod, you're guaranteed 35 homers, 110 rbi's, 110 runs, and 15-20 steals at worst. No one else can give you that guarantee.
