Big Ten Fantasy football

Ok, I will declare two things as "given" like those annoying proofs in Geometry:

1. I am a fantasy sports geek (in a baseball and football league)

2. It is only friggen February

I am interested in starting a Big Ten Fantasy Football League. I want this to be a keeper league (redshirting, etc.). I have tried this will all my buds but the majority are weak and don't have "time" or the $$ to play. I think this is just an excuse for the fact that there exists no "Lindy's Big Ten Fantasy Football Magazine" and they're afraid of looking like losers when they draft.

Therefore, I am turning to my fellow Spartans. Is there anyone interested in such a league? If so, please PM me. I would love to get dates (mid July to mid August) and players on the board as possibilities.

I cannot play fantasy sports without some $$ (50-100) involved. I realize that for some of you the thought of paying for a league in which you may know no one is a shady proposition, however I can assure you, this isn't anything to worry about. If it still is, I'm sure we can work something out, i.e. paypal or something.

The plan is to hold the draft at a metro Detroit establishment (I draft better with beer). BW-3 in Novi or Sterling Heights comes to mind. The locale will be dictated by those that can show and be as convenient for everyone. I am going to make this an in-person draft only. I'll be responsible for the big board and for arranging everything else.

I have cut and pasted some basic rules for your perusal. Keep in mind, this is a first-year thing, and once we get our group (8-11) we can adjust as needed; some of you may have done this in the past and know what works. I am going to stand firm on the idea of a keeper league; those that know which freshman are going to be studs should be rewarded for their "vision"

I realize that by posting a call out for a fantasy league on a internet fan site has placed me into a whole different stratosphere of geekiness. I accept that. Those that want to make fun of this, flame away. Anyone seriously interested in doing this, send me a private message.

2004 Big Ten Fantasy Football
-This fantasy league will include all teams of the Big Ten (11)
-The regular season will last either 11 or 12 weeks, depending on the number of teams in the league.
-The season includes all non-conference games .
-The College Fantasy Bowl will be held during the final week of the season when rivalry games such as Michigan vs. Ohio State, Northwestern and Illinois, MSU and Penn State and Purdue and Indiana take place.
-Entry fee will be between $50 & $100
-Teams will match-up in head to head games and the scoring is attached. The scoring system is very basic because we won’t have a computer (cbssportsline., etc) doing our scoring for us.
-The draft will be 14-16 rounds. You will draft 14 players for your active roster and, if you wish, 2 redshirts. This league will be a keeper league. You will be allowed to protect a maximum of 7 players, 5 active players and your 2 redshirts for the next season. At no point may you have more than 14 active players. You may keep a protected player as long as you wish, or at least until he graduates, declares, enters rehab for good or gets kicked out of school for cheating on exams.
-Once a player is taken off your redshirt list, he can never be redshirted again. So if you draft a stud freshman and you play him, you lose a redshirt and must cut a player to get your active roster back to 14.
-While it is anticipated that your redshirts will be used for freshmen/sophomores or even high school players who have committed to a school, there is nothing against taking an upperclassman and using him as a redshirt.
-You may draft as you wish, however each starting lineup must include:
-1 Quarterback
-2 Running backs
-2 Wide Receivers (not three as in the NFL league)
-1 TE
-1 K
-1 DE
-I will need your lineup, preferably via e-mail, by Saturday kickoff (or Thursday if a Big Ten team is involved). Ideally, I’d have all lineups in by Friday night so I can send them back out by Saturday morning before I leave, in many cases, for East Lansing. I will calculate the stats on Sunday morning and have an email out by Sunday night. Because we are dealing with so few teams and the scoring will be, in most cases, much lower than the pro version, I am anticipating a much easier job figuring stats (I guess we’ll see).
-While this year is a regular draft, next year will be in auction format. Once again, you will be able to protect up to 7 players. The only way you can keep 7 is if you do not play two players you have decided to redshirt. Redshirts may be traded during the season, however once traded they can no longer be considered a redshirt.
-Next year’s drafting salary cap will be 1400. Each protected player is going to cost you 200 to protect, while each protected redshirt will cost 100. So if you end up protecting 5 active players and 2 redshirts, then you’re looking at 1200 right there, which means the rest of your roster will have to come from the remaining 200. Remember, this salary cap and other stuff only takes effect next year, however you should have this in mind while drafting this year.
-After next year’s 200, every year you protect a player, his salary goes up 50.
-The reason for making this a keeper league is to put a premium on freshman and sophomores who the drafter thinks will make an impact down the road.
-With the keeper aspect of this league, I expect this draft to be very unpredictable with some emphasizing young players while others look to win with seniors.
-Also, there are no Big Ten Fantasy Football Magazines, so we’re all pretty much on our own.
-Thursday will be waiver day during the course of the year. If you want to pick up a player, e-mail me by Thursday of that week. If two players want the same player, then the worst record will determine who gets that player. If the records are the same, then the worst point total gets the pick.
-The trade deadline will be Week 5 of the Big Ten Season. Once Week 5 games begin, no trades can be made. There is no waiver deadline.
-It is expected there will be some turnover from year to year. At the draft we’ll figure out procedures for “expansion teams” in the future.

The square is seldom if ever cool ... He is "not with it", that is, he doesn't know "whats happening." But if he manages to figure it out, he moves up a notch to "hip." And if he can bring himself to approve of what's happening, he becomes "groovy." And after that, with much luck and perseverence, he can rise to the rank of "cool."

Where are you moving? Outstate? What time in July? I'm willing to draft a bit earlier.

Going to Georgia, and am moving sometime in July. Depends on the work transfer
