Rivals - 5 Star Big Man Likes Cats $

"I have been talking the most to USC, UCLA, Michigan State, Georgetown, Ohio State, Kentucky, and North Carolina State."

Nothing much about favorites. States that he doesn't care about distance.

This guy had numerous 2 point games this year and he's a 5 star recruit?

I hope Tom passes.

And if he can bring himself to approve of what's happening, he becomes "groovy." And after that, with much luck and perseverence, he can rise to the rank of "cool."

his defense is what makes him the 5 star and the potential. if he picks us, the coaches can work on him to the point where his offensive game would come along. but Tom loves his defense so Riley would work out just fine

A 5 star should provide more than a couple shot blocks and rebounds. I love Tom, but 5 & 4 star bigs Gray, Naymick and Herzog haven't exactly developed into impact players under Tom.

Revoke it and ship that project to Georgetown. C'mon, guy is a 7ft junior in high school and has weak 2 and 0 point games. How many 5 star recruits have 0 point games? ZERO points!

I'm not sure if you've seen him play but he is very similar to Herzog (and will probably will end up being ranked in a similar position). Riley is long, has a good frame, moves pretty well, and has pretty good defensive instincts. I'd probably give Herzog the edge offensively (in high school).

This is a big summer for him, needs to show some consistency and that he LOVES basketball.

And I agree with AA, no need to bash recruits

Have heard that as well. I know Georgetown was in town to see him play with Country Day in one of their high school playoff games (Izzo saw him and Kirk in a different playoff game). Riley is intriguing to me because everyone in the country was extremely high on him a year ago and over the summer. Stat wise, he had less a year than I think many expected, especially for someone with his size and talent. I think that might be why many seem to have allegedly cooled on him. At this point, I am writing that off to his high school coach, which happens to be one of the worst around. Just not a good basketball mind as does not run anything for Riley or Kirk.

He's this decade's Joe Barry Carroll.

A ton of potential but you never know what personality is going to show up come game time. He can look dominant one night and bored the next game.

I agree

Don't bad mouth recruits...I got a warning about Sherman already. Just can't do it I guess. Tomorrow is a big day, but Pitt is a terrible second game draw...they look great and come from the best conference. Big men have to step up or we're done.

You think his lack of offensive production this season is due to Coach Keener's coaching? What basis do you have for saying he is just not 'a good basketball mind'?

Because I have been witness to many DCDS games and I think Keener is a poor coach. I think part of his lack of production is because DCDS does not run anything for their big guys.

I think it takes a player who is highly motivated to standout every game at DCD. Shane Battier and Chris Weber were two players that dominated in HS in spite of the collection of very good players recruited to play around them.

I also think a 17 year old who is almost 7 feet tall has a lot more to deal with on and off the court than most of us will ever know. Until he started playing against AAU teams how often did he even face a player he couldn't dominate with minimum effort? Another question is how insistent is his coach on getting him touches in scoring locations every trip down and how often do his team mates comply.

Like I said, I have seen this kid play lights out one night and look bored the next time out. He'll mature and get more skills but can he do it as fast as other 6'10+ players he will be facing in college wherever he plays?

How many NBA players do most Class B? C? teams have? Oh wait, most schools don't recruit to a posh campus in Birmingham.

At least 6 all with "scholarship" players playing key roles

Webber was pretty lazy in high school (and college, and the NBA). He was so damn good it didn't matter though.

phavenst, I have no idea if Keener is a good coach or not, haven't seen DCD play enough of them to form an opinion. However, I think people start looking for an excuses when DCD loses to Flint Powers by 10 and only scoring 35 points when their tallest player is a 6'3 sophomore. Meanwhile DCD throws out a frontline of 6'10, 6'8, and 6'5 with a guard in the backcourt that has full ride to a MAC school. DCD has 3 legitimate Division 1 players and the son of Joe Dumars while Flint Powers has .....uh..... the youngest Lucas Perry? Keener has won 6 state championships with Country Day 89-91 and 95-97. Each and everyone of these came with either the most dominant Michigan Class B big man in the past 50 years or with someone who has their jersey hanging from the rafters of Cameron indoor. Like I said I don't know if Keener is a good coach or not, just that success for DCD basketball is expected and when it doesn't happen people start looking for someone to blame.

Your point about what these really tall guys have to deal with OFF the court is spot on. Things we take for granted are a real issue for them to face, process and ultimately deal with. These are just kids, very young adults who are trying to find their way in this world and not just on the court.

I made this exact same post about Al Horford when he was at Grand Ledge.
