Elite hoops recruit has MSU on short list

High school hoops star Jamil Wilson, a 6-foot-7 swingman, has MSU on his list of four schools (Duke, UCLA and Kansas are the others). Mark March 8, 2009, on your calendars; That is when Wilson will announce his decision. Wilson is ranked No. 58 in the Rivals.com 2009 class, while Scout.com has him pegged as the 16th-best prospect. May 18, 2008, Lansing State Journal: MSU has seemingly come from nowhere because just two months ago the Spartans weren't among Wilson's list of favorites. In fact, there was speculation that Wilson would select nearby Marquette, which was coached by Tom Crean. But after Crean left for the Indiana job, things opened up and MSU turned up the heat on Wilson. He quickly put the Spartans among his favorite schools.
"I know that they have a pretty tight program," Wilson said. "I watched MSU a lot during last year's season."
But he still maintains, "I'm still open to all schools."

The only real update that I put any stock into is when Jamil was quoted as saying, "I'm Open to All Schools". Anything else is just based on a story spun by someone to make it sound like their school is in the lead.

There really aren't any updates on the recruiting front, as he's already said he will visit MSU, Duke, Kansas, & UCLA (and possibly a team to be named later). On the AAU front, his numbers are quite meager because he likes to defer to his teammates a lot and his PG likes to take a lot of shots. Hope to catch more updates on his play in the near future.

Though not about Wilson, Jeronne Maymon chose Marquette. He is another 6'6 SF for Marquette in the 09 class. Does this take them out of the Wilson sweepstakes? I know he has not talked about them for awhile, but there was still speculation that Wisky and Marq were up there for Jamil.

From Mark Miller's article on Maymon's commitment:
“They guaranteed me a starting spot, but I know I will have to work hard to keep that starting spot,” Maymon said.

Looks like MU isn't too confident about Jamil.

I doubt that this impacts Wilson in any way with Marquette in regards to scholarship availability. I think they'll have plenty of room with Wilson, if both parties are still interested. And Maymon seems to have the flexibility to play a few different positions, so that wouldn't be much of an impediment.

I don't think Marquette's scholarship availability isn't the issue here. Did you notice the quote I posted above? Maymon's best position is SF (not a lot of 6'4" PFs in the B10) and Buzz guaranteed him a starting spot. Certainly, Buzz doesn't fee real confident with Jamil if he already guaranteed a starting spot at Jamil's position to an inferior player.

I doubt Buzz offered him a starting spot, there's going to be a bunch of wings ahead of him, anything coming out of Maymon or his dad's mouth should be taken with a grain of salt. There's 6-6 sg Butler, 6-6 sf Hayward, 6-7 sf Fulce, and incoming 6-7 sf Williams vying for the 2/3/4 positions. Hayward will be a senior.
Reading into what Mark Miller has been saying, Maymon and Wilson have no affect on their respective recruitment from Marquette's perspective. If Wilson doesn't go to Marquette, it will have more to do with playing time on the wing than the Marquette staff not recruiting him because they don't feel comfortable with him.
Marquette also has 5 scholarships available, with a possible 6th opening up. Plenty of time. Maymon is also a huge academic risk, good chance he'll go prep or juco. Buzz's style of play is also similar to TAMU/UK where there's going to be a bunch of versatile wings playing together rather than a traditional pg/sg/sf/pf/c but a pg/sf/sf/sf/pf lineup.
Not to mention March 2009 is a long ways away.
In other news, Howell is high on Marquette (and Oregon) also.

Howell has not been an option of msu for a long time. I like what I hear about Howell but it's just not in the cards from him and msu. This is a big debate among spartan fans. Some thinking MSU should press him and others are in agreement with experts on Howell.

17U Division
Jamil Wilson, 6-7, F, Racine Horlick (Playground Elite)
My choice for Most Valuable Player of the 17U bracket, Wilson was simply outstanding while leading the Playground Elite to a 69-56 victory over Team NLP of Chicago in the title game. Whether he was swatting shots, using his length to defend on the perimeter and in the post, running the team from the point-guard position or making shots, Wilson showed why he is so highly regarded with his dominating play in the second half of the contest against Team NLP. Wilson scored 17 points in the title-game victory and did a great job of shutting down rugged 6-foot-3 Lenzelle Smith of Zion-Benton, Ill., during the final 10 minutes of the contest. Wilson was somewhat quiet during the Playground Elite’s lopsided victories in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, but his play in the title game was stellar.
