Johnson
I haven't heard much of this guy lately since I don't have a subscription, but anyone know anything about him?
These are the types of players I think Izzo needs to recruit more of. This guy is 6'7" and plays SG/SF. Supposedly he can shoot lights out.
Thats what memphis had against us... their shortest guard was taller than our tallest guard (Rose vs Summers).
If Izzo recruits some of these tall SG's that can rain down shots from anywhere.... who could stop them. Also, mix in the fact that, if needed, this guy could play some low post moves against a smaller team.
This guy just makes me think Corey Brewer.
Neitzel was one of my favorite spartans, along with KLIF as well... but they are barely reaching 6'0". I'm surprised we haven't been pushing for more of these types of players.

FYI Summers is an inch taller than Rose, and CDR is Memphis' tallest guard at 6'7

I know CDR is 6'7", but isnt their other guard 6'6" as well? 6'3 + 6'6 + 6'7 is a lot more than our 6'4 (summers, at most) + 6 + 6.

MSU's height is not an issue. They are going after a wing this year and obviously a 6-7 kid with the game of a 6-2 kid is preferable, buy those types don't grow on trees. Next year MSU has PLENTY of length and athleticism. Memphis is the exception, so stop with the comparisons.

relax
Ok first of all.... the whole reason I wrote replied to this thread was just to state that I think we should start going for the taller/more athletic guards.
The only reason I brought Memphis up, was as a comparison. I never said Memphis was the best team to ever play basketball.
I never even said that MSU had height issues.... most teams don't have 5 PF/C's that are all 6'9" or above.
All I was saying is that I think we should start going after these tall shooting guard type of players. Raymar is more geared toward playing down low. This Johnson guy, from what I read on rivals/scout has an incredible shot from just about anywhere.
Why not go for a tall shooter/slasher?
Chill out with the " MSU doesn't need height" comments. It was all my personal opinion

Sure it is. Now is it THE most pressing issue? Not at all but you can't tell me that Neitzel struggling with his shot against Memphis wasn't the result of him being gaurded by a kid with at least 5 inches on him. And Kalin defending Derrick Rose? That was another severe height, weight and strength mismatch. CDR and Travis? C'mon. And Purdue is another team that has a lot of team height (especially at the guard and wing positions) that may pose some problems for MSU in the upcoming seasons.
When MSU was rolling to Final Four after Final Four, the shortest two players on the roster were Mateen Cleaves (who was a stocky and strong 6'2") and 6'3" Charlie Bell. Everyone else (IIRC) was 6'6" and taller. When you have height like that, there are certain mismatches that you can enjoy game in and game out. It's a definite advantage and MSU just isn't going to be able to have those mismatches (at least the ones that are in our favor) very frequently over the next handful of year with so many guards 6'3" and shorter on the roster (ie. Lucious, Lucas, Walton, Allen...and maybe Appling soon thereafter).
I've been saying for a while that Izzo needs to go after more height, length and bounce at the wing positions. More 6'5" to 6'7" combo-wings who can play a variety of positions. More Mo Pete's, Alan Andersons, JR's, Ray Morgans...hell even David Thomas. More prototypical NBA SG's regardless of whether they have legit NBA prospects and talent or not.

Johnson is sick
Legitimate 6'6 kid who can shoot the ball extremely well.Another kid who us georgians think is under ranked. I would take him over Stewart in a heartbeat. Much more refined game just needs to hit the weight room.Which is the case most youngsters. Stewart has great hops but give me the more skilled player.

Well, he said that their shortest guard (rose) was taller than our tallest guard (summers). He was wrong, and by your logic, your post is a very insightful asset to be thread.

we NEED this kid!
I have read the general 09 recruiting thread and a few others near the top of the page....
No one is even considering this kid. They all want Riley/Kirk/etc,etc.
We have Nix and Sherman - 2 bigs to go along with Delvon Roe.
For the 3rd scholarship we either need Jamil Wilson or this kid, Noel Johnson.
He is 6'6" and has "one of the best strokes in highschool bball"
Why would we not want this guy? 6'6"! He can drop treys or he can post up a smaller gaurd/sf.
He is only 2 inches shorter than most of the other sf/pf we are going after, plus he can shoot from anywhere.

We do have 2 more scholarships to use, so maybe you'll get your wish.

Hopefully
This shouldn't only be my wish.
It should be the wish of a large number of fans.
I thought he was 6'6", but it actually has him listed at 6'7".
Beef him up a little, get his weight/strength up by bangin down low with the big boys (Nix, Roe, Gray, Suton, Herzog), and have him play the wing against our current guards... he could be a real threat.
Is he any type of slasher? We need a Corey Brewer (I know I already made this comparison) type player.
and.....it can open up that pipeline to GA
I think the worst part about it is that I believe he would go on UNC, Texas, Louisville, or Memphis and become an outstanding player.
but hey... what do I know. Maybe Izzo doesnt like him, maybe he is actually behind the scenes recruiting him. It would be good to hear some news/info on this kid though

There IS no news on him. He's not focusing on recruiting right now. If you checked any of the services, Scout last did an article on him in December and Rivals in early January. There is nothing being written about him.
It's not like we aren't looking at two other Georgia kids as well towards that pipeline.
Don't focus on one kid or you are going to be disappointed. Still a lot of recruiting to go.

Does Noel have an offer? And why are we not pressing for him? I know rankings aren't everything but he is well ahead of Wilson is terms of that. I would like us to put the press on for more than just wilson when we have other highly ranked players interested but not getting the love

If he was seriously interested in MSU and the coaches wanted him, they'd be putting on the full court press. Other than the MSU Scout article, he's only listed us as "a school he's hearing from"...nothing more
