Welcome to the family Big D.

Derrick, I may have been critical of your skills and conditioning after what I saw in the State Finals but that doesn't mean that I'm not going to be one of your biggest fans and supporters as you approach your senior season at Pershing and freshman year at MSU. Keep working on your game and conditioning and great things will follow.

If kid can get down to around a strong and LEGIT 265 (he is not 275 right now), I think many of the flaws that I saw a few months back will be a thing of the past. You cannot teach that brand of size and strength to go with his soft and sure hands...and with a little more quickness and agility to his game, his stock will jump a lot in my eyes.

This is a great get by . Izzo likes to have our teams run, but most of the game is played in the half court and we constantly get killed every year by other teams forcing out of the middle. Good to have a guy like Nix that can stand his ground and pull down big boards, like the kind we couldn't get in the first half against Memphis. Izzo is putting together a well rounded team that can run when he wants or sit back and play half court if needed. This guy will provide the physical toughness this team has been lacking the past few years. Welcome to MSU Derrick Nix.

I'm still having flashbacks about the first half against Memphis, that said, welcome to MSU Nix, you have no idea how happy we are to have you!!

On paper, Nix might compare in terms of size/weight...but from what I've seen he's not even close to being as athletic as these guys.

I really, really, reeaaaaaaally hope I'm wrong. But at this point, it seems like a panic move...and really concerns me about the direction of the program. Maybe that sounds overly dramatic...but I just don't see it.

trust in I suppose.

Al was a monster physically. He was absolutely ripped. Nix, not so much.

how would it be a panic move this time of year with so many PF/C still on the board. I thinking just likes what he see's and what he could become. It's alot easier to get him physically where he wants him than a guy who can't gain any weight. (Herzog) and even look how long it took Naymick to gain enough strength to be effective on the block on both Offense and on Defense.

but we were only in on a few, that were either leaning elsewhere or not especially highly touted

whatever, like i said...i hope i'm wrong.

I'm curious as to how many people commenting in this thread have seen him play, either live or in person.

Dave Telep and Justin Young both say Nix will probably be a 4 Star in the Top 100 of both Scout and Rivals. Nix outplayed the top big men in the country the past two weeks.

I don't think Nix is strong, just heavy...soft, if you will.

The dude can barely get up and down the floor, and he can't jump....I've never seen a video of the kid dunking....he couldn't dunk when left alone in the finals at the Brez....

I don't understand this offer by Iz.....

That's why you are not experts like us.

Nix is put together. He is not ripped like Al was, but Al did not have the skill that Nix has.

I have seen Nix in person 4 times. Yes, he is heavy but started shedding weight at the end of the season. Don't be mislead.....the kid is strong and put together. While not the greatest athlete, I think he will become a better one as he continues to drop weight. I have seen him dunk in 2 or 3 of the games. Saw him play in the state playoffs vs PSL Champ Northwestern. Pershing won by 12, and they scored in the mid 90s. Nix was as a stud that game, and kept up with the pace.

Heh. If the kid was 6'11" and 225 people would be complaining that he was too soft, not strong enough and will be pushed around. He has potential for sure and enough size to step in early.

so even if he is a project, Izzo can redshirt him to get him where he wants him to be. I think he will be fine. All he has to do is battle down low and not be soft

Drew was plagued by shoulder problems for most of his spartan career that kept him out of the weight room. I always wonder how well he might have ended up if he wouldn't have missed his first few offseason lifting programs due to rehab.

Good read on Nix from prepspotlight. Sam Hosey and Vince Baldwin know their **** and they love the kid.

"But after his performance in Pitt, Nix was on the most-wanted list of several schools looking for a center. Aside from MSU the list included Ohio State, Tennessee, Pitt, Iowa and Marquette."

"Nix said he wasn’t really aware that so many schools were interested in him. In fact, last weekend at the Pitt Jam fest, Pitt Panther big man DeJuan Blair came over and tried to recruit Nix."

The kid is improving very fast. Anyone who saw Al Horford in HS knows how fast post players can improve. He has the work ethic, he has the intangibles for a big man, and he really, really wants to be a Spartan. Great get by Izzo.

Welcome to MSU, Derrick!

You wouldn't get a consensus on this board unless he was a top 5 ranked player in the country. Anything worse than that, people for some reason second guess the head coach.

I'd have a little more trust in Izzo and his talent evaluation. People here complain we're too short, so we recruit a bunch of 6'9-7'0" guys. Then those tall guys are too weak, so we get a recruit who's got great size and is growing into his body and dominated the competition and they complain about him. So, the complainers on here.... How many HS recruits have you evaluated and signed for one of the Top 10 D1 BBall programs? How many D1 college basketball games have you coached and won? How many have you played in?

Not until the last season of said players collegiate career should you second guess a recruit and Izzo's decision to bring him in and ability to coach him up.
