Derrick Nix is ranked #88 in the ESPN Super 60 - Class of 2009

Evaluation

December, 2007: The term "Wide Body" was developed for players like Nix. Tipping the scales at just over 290 pounds, he's now slimmed down and has become a force on the floor. He's a load in the paint and simply can't be stopped once he catches the ball and squares up on the block. He keeps working hard to lose some weight and his efforts have paid off. He's got great hands and has surprisingly good footwork for a player that big. However, his stamina and end-to-end movement need to improve for him to be at his best. As you can imagine he's not much of a shot blocker at this point because his bounce is limited but he can score inside on anyone.

Big man, and we mean big, Derrick Nix throws his 275-pounds around with ease for The Family. The 6-foot-8 big man has great footwork for a player of his size and despite his team's loss to the Chicago Express, he showed as much promise as any of the five Division I big men that stepped foot onto the floor. He's a mid-major prospect for the time being. That could change in the short future.

There is a scout video at College Basketball Recruiting Front Page. I couldn't find a direct link. Anyway, Telep saw the Family game and said this about Nix:

- The Family has 4 guys 6'8" or higher.
- DeShonte Riley is more of a prospect than player.
- The guy he likes is Derrick Nix.
- He's a mini DeJuan Blair.
- Big body knows how to use it. Posts up hard and will be a really good player in time.
- MSU "is messing with him" not a lot of others yet.

Some footage from the game.

Seems like MSU has been missing an enforcer type in the post. Could this guy be the next Antonio Smith/Andre Hutson/Al Anagonye?

I haven't seen him play, but he looks like he'd have the size.

I think the comment was closer to meaning "a poor man's Blair".

What specifically would the highlighted part of the above quote mean? Is there some new way the term "messing with him" might mean? When I was growing up, that wasn't necessarily considered to be a good thing. Somone help out on this one please. TIA.

Thanks. That much I had gathered, but the terminology used just seemed a little bit off kilter.

I'm only going off the 2 games I saw him play at the Bres last month.

Hands - good I guess
Post Moves - I didn't see much that impressed me
Finishing ability - embarrassingly bad (stuffed by the rim on a dunk, missed layups, no touch)

I don't even know if the weight & conditioning is correctable...he just doesn't look athletic at all.

As for being an "enforcer" in the post...can't see it at all. Too slow, didn't appear to be especially aggressive or tough.

If I'm wrong about him, I'll be very surprised...but you never know.

He has good hands but I don't recall him having many post moves...and he also doesn't jump or move very well and for a guy his size, he doesn't block shots well either. So he has good hands, he's big and he can rebound the basketball. From what I've seen though, that's about it.

SpartanMag.com - Boo Williams top surprises

Quote:
Derrick Nix, C, The Family
On a team with a number of higher-profile big men, the 6-foot-8, 275-pound monster was the team's most effective prospect in the paint. There were few players in the tournament field that could throw a body at him Nix is incredibly nimble for his size, he has great hands and a soft touch in the paint and around the cup. Playing along with DaShonte Riley, Donnovan Kirk and James Still, all top 100 prospects, Nix might have been the most productive of the bunch. High-majors will certainly taking a good look at him this month.

i agree on the assessment about the 2 games at the brez. he did not look good at all. But, I have heard many other reports that he is doing well in other games and tournaments. we will see. I still have kirk (for quickness and athleticism) ahead of him.

Saw the 2 games the Breslin as well and agree completely, but will say that Pershing's full court press and fastbreak style is not exactly the best fit for his game to put it mildly. Pershing would take him out half of the time to give him a rest and help out their press, meanwhile they would seemingly not get a single rebound during those stretches.

Which is exactly why I don't want him @ MSU!

FWIW, for those of you that saw him play in the semis or finals (or any other time for that matter), his equally large backup that came of the bench to spell him is an offensive line prospect:

That he isn't great in the full court press and gets every rebound for his HS team?
