tOfficial 2009 Basketball Recruiting Thread

We didn't have one of these yet. Figured that we needed one for general recruiting talk so it doesn't break out the player update threads.

Well, I'd say that Sherman had a pretty good year. It's the rest of them that apparently haven't impressed as much.

Just seems like we do not have a deep pool of recruits that we are looking at. Any new names starting to surface ??

There will be new names next month, when the AAU season gets started.

It would be nice to have a team of complete parts. Seems like we have lacked guard play at times and had a good big and vise versa. We flat out need some PF studs instead of the collection of parts we have...

Pretty much garbage now. Maybe it's best to let that one go since the unbridled optimism turned really ugly when Strickland bailed.

Anybody have a summary of what the Rivals B11 '09 recruiting breakdown says? They're doing one for each conference and yesterday was the B11 I think.

Can you at least link it? I have no idea what you're referencing.

MCD All Americans

Glad to see Izzo recently say that we need to upgrade our talent with the aforementioned type players ("some teams have MCD All Americans coming off the bench). Role players like Sherman are important but we'll need some more jaw dropping talent to compete for national championships. Go get em Izzo!!!!

Yep because more often than not teams with bunches of McD's All American's do very badly, just look at UNC, UCLA, Kansas, etc.

With the new NBA rules forcing players to attend college (a rule which might increase to a minimum of 2 years in the near future) good teams that are able to recruit the susperstar high schoolers (even if its just for a year or two) are going to be at HUGE advantage over the teams that do not have the services of a likely future NBA All Star.

Just think if this year's MSU team had a talent like LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Dwight Howard or Kevin Garnett. Even if its for just a single season, that caliber of player would make a big difference for any ol' team and they would make an enormous difference for a team that's already good. Just look at the impacts of Derrick Rose and Kevin Love. The above perennial NBA All-Stars would have been forced to attend some college program out there if the current rules applied back then.

Why not MSU?

Would you rather these kinds of super recruits start heading to Duke or Carolina or Memphis or UCLA every other year? I know I don't.

Exactly TripleGreen, OSU has had amazing recruiting success over the last 2 or 3 recruiting classes, not that they had much on court success this year, but with the college game potentially moving to 2 years out of high school that has a HUGE impact on the college game. OSU is in the NIT final game, but if Cooke, Conley, and Oden around with Koufas etc things would be a lot different. Izzo said himself that he didnt recruit Oden because he thought that he was going pro. I trust Izzo and have complete confidence in him, but maybe its just me when I see UNC get 3 or 4 five star recruits every other year I think that MSU can get a couple more than we are. I shudder at the thought of Mullens and Koufos on the floor at the same time 80% of the time next year even if they have nobody else, which they won't.

Don't want to turn AA's thread into wild speculation, but.. Who is our next verbal? Anybody who follows recruiting more than me (everybody) care to take a guess?

If I had to guess I'd say Donovan Kirk. Not much behind that guess in recent weeks. I would have been a lot more confident in that guess 3 weeks ago actually.

The 2 year requirement will be a while

It will take a new NBA contract since the increase would require union negotiation and agreement and they just signed the one. How long is it for?
