This could be a very quick bunch to defend. Looking forward to the continued success of the program.

Don't forget about Thornton. I am quite sure he will play a bigger role than SIms.

I'm trying to get a handle on some things. Our coach just went to his fifth final four in eleven years. We just played in the national championship game and we're picked as high as no. 1 for next season. We've already filled up up two slots with highly regarded recruits for 2010 and now we're waiting around for the no.14 small forward in the country who is apparently open to all suitors to decide whether or not to grace us with his presence!?

Question, are there offers out there to other small forwards? Man, when is it going to happen!? When is going to be able to relax from the recruiting trail because the kids he wants are as eager as Day Day and Derrick Nix were to play for ?
TIA

You're right about Izzo. That seems to be his frustration. For him, it's not about "elite" players, five stars, or recruiting nationally. He wants to be able to target the players he prefers and not have to work so hard to get them.

I hope this run pays dividends soon, not just for the fans and program but to make the coach's life a little bit easier.
You would think it'd be a big clincher with a recruit like Zeigler. Oh well.

That's really what I'd like to see from this last tournament run. At every level there are kids who will jump at an offer. There are kids that will jump at an offer to play for Western, kids that will jump at an offer to play for UM, and some who will jump at an offer to play here. If we're willing to cede the one and dones to wherever they want to go, how much success do we actually have to have before can select from top tier two, three and four year players instead of dealing with this Roe to UNC, Wilson to Oregon baloney!? How much success does it take!? We've got really nice looking players coming in but hopefully soon will be able to pick players from his living room.

Izzo and his team will always need to work hard to recruit the best players, and the players he wants. There are just too many other big-time winning programs offering the same kids for it to ever be easy. There will always be a couple kids that will jump to come here, but they aren't always going be the level MSU needs.

We're not talking about all these 5 star players shuffling around Kentucky, Memphis, tOSU, UNC... As far as I know, we aren't in play for any of them. I think Wilson was ranked in the nineties, something like that. Ziegler, 75.

The recent success we've had is at the highest level, and there are very few programs that can match it (Pitt's last final four...1941?!), yet we don't seem to be going for the highest level kids- perhaps for very good reason. I'd think more of these kids from, say, the thirties on back to 100 would love the opportunity to play here. It seems insane to me that Ziegler would think we'll still have a slot open by the end of the summer when he's ready to commit.

I don't follow all this as closely as most on the board. I like the idea of focusing on kids that hopefully will be around awhile. The success has had has been nothing short of amazing. Right now, one of the one and dones caught up in the coaching shuffle would be really nice to augment what we already have lined up for next year. It just seems like we're the perfect choice for anyone who wants to grab an NCAA national championship before going off to get a really nice paycheck.

Mt. Pleasant's Zeigler has many suitors | detnews.com | The Detroit News

Quote:
Last year the AAU circuit proved to be a launching pad for the recruitment of Mt. Pleasant shooting guard Trey Zeigler. His highlight performance came during a five-game scoring explosion in a July tournament in Las Vegas.

On the heels of that impressive display, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound junior saw a number of schools step forward with scholarship offers. Now that AAU action is ramping up again, Zeigler could see the temperature in his recruitment rise even more.

Because we didn't have a scholarship available at first because Mojo hadn't transferred yet, right?

Comes up on GatorBait. Offered by Florida???

Also, I like the idea (true?) that the Gauna commit could put a little pressure on Zeigler to accept the last scholarship. Not to make him attend a school he doesn't want to but to give him a nudge if he's on the fence.
