From the Adidas Nations Scrimmage...

Suprise Players...
Ray McCallum (6-1, 180)
2010, Bloomington, Ind./ North
McCallum is one of the top point guard prospects in the Class of 2010. He has a strong physique and numerous speeds to his game. He is very savvy at changing speeds depending on the situation. He knows when to push it transition and understands when to pull it back to get his team into its offense. He is a true point guard who is an excellent passer both off the bounce and in transition. He always has his head up and his decision-making is impeccable. His jump shot is solid (smooth release) out to the stripe, but he's more comfortable with his midrange pull-up. Overall, McCallum probably had the highest basketball IQ of all the point guards I saw during the scrimmage and it wouldn't surprise me if he is starting for a high-major program during the 2009-10 season.

I would have no problem with RMJ being MSU's PG recruit for the 2010 class. He sounds like an intelligent and pure PG. Just what MSU needs.

I would think that getting a PG out of Bloomington would be very difficult.

Umm, I believe Appling is our PG prospect for that class.

Yeah, but he's not really a true PG at this point.
If we have 4 ships then those in the running are McCallam, Appling, Zeigler, Byrd for the guard spots, we could try for 3 of 4 with one big.
If we have 3, then it gets dicey on who to try and get.

I don't think so...Appling is going to become a true point in terms of him running the offense (he will be a scoring pg, but so is Lucas and Luscious). Byrd is obviously the first choice of a SG/SF since he has an offer. From the Byrd articles in which he talks about his meeting with Izzo, Izzo evidently stated that we are looking for a PG/SG/ and a big. Now, with the four open schollies (ie, if Wilson passes), then why take another guard to replace him. Why not look for another SF/PF hybrid wing. Maybe it could be Zeigler, but I can't see a spot being open for McCallam unless Appling went somewhere else.

And I would have no qualms with Izzo taking RMJ as the PG recruit over Appling. Right now it appears that Keith is more of an undersized SG anyways. He's talented no doubt, but then again...so is McCallum and I would love to see Izzo bring in a 100% pure PG in one of the next few classes.

Well, perhaps you don't, but it looks like Appling is penciled in to be our PG of 2010 since he has an offer. I don't even know if McCallum is interested in MSU, or if we are interested in him.

McCallum/Dumars/Williams/Kirk/Riley = On paper, that's the best team since Renaissance '04. But we're talking about CD here-they'll probably go down in regionals or quarters.

Is Michigan State in Ray McCallum's Future?

McCallum is charged with getting the ball to the right guy (out of the four Division 1 prospect on his squad) at the right time. That's something he has excelled at this year, leading Birmingham Detroit Country Day to a perfect 11-0 record. So will Michigan State go hard to land this outstanding talent? Only GoSpartans.net has the answer.

any insiders for scout know what the general idea of this article is?? I've heard he is pretty high on Kansas, and people on the UDM boards think he will end up there with his dad

I know how most people here feel about ESPN's recruiting information but I thought I'd pass it along that they now rank McCallum as No. 10 in the Top 60 for the class of 2010.
I kid you not.
Zeigler, Appling, and Byrd are in there too, in that order.

saw this kid play last night against Flint Powers. He is the real deal. Very impressed with his game. Incredible athlete as well. Mike Garland was in the stands.....as well as Kampe from Oakland, his dad, and I am sure some others.

Talk is that he's far and away the best player in the state (think NBA type player).

Now, I have only seen him once, however, I was not THAT impressed with him. Just as a side, my brother was sitting next to me thought he was a senior and not a junior. His opinion was that he looked like he could be a very quality MAC player.
When we discussed him being a Junior, neither of us thought he was anywhere close to being #10 in the country. Don't get me wrong, I think he can play in the big 10, but I don't see him as being huge impact, like a say, Kalin Lucas.
This could change, but I felt he was fairly week with the ball. To me, he looked like more of an average to good athlete (by big time basketball standards). He was solid with his fundamentals and seemed like he understood the game (understandable with his dad being a coach).

I disagree with the assessment of him.......I have only seen McCallum once, but I think he is definitely better than Kalin Lucas was at OLSM. I had the opportunity to see Lucas several times in high school, and do believe McCallum has a better game than him. Ray is definitely a better shooter and athlete than Kalin was, but what I did not see enough of Ray to determine whether or not he can break people down like Kalin could. I have to assum he can, because he is such good athlete.

It makes one wonder whether a solid alternative recruiting plan would have been to focus on Appling as a SG (since he's not a pure point) and then target McCallum as your '10 PG.
We have been starting two PGs on the floor for the past few years anyway (Walton/Neitzel, Lucas/Walton). It's not like Appling is too short for Izzo to put him on the court with another 6 foot player.

saw Country Day vs. OL St. Marys tonight. McCallum was the best player on the court tonight IMO. He is the missing piece that DCD needed to be this year. He has an angry look on his face the whole game. Very intense. Good handles. Was a foot over the rim on a one handed putback; can easily and quickly elevate.
I don't know if we have room for him with Appling on board, but it's worth talking about.
