'10 OH PF/C Adreian Payne (MSU Verbal)
Adreian Payne - Basketball Recruiting
Scout.com: Adreian Payne Profile
Power forward
Dayton (OH) Jefferson
AAU: All-Ohio Red
Ht: 6-foot-9
Wt: 210 lbs
Class: 2010 (High School)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This guy has mentioned that we are recruiting him (ignore his lists). Numerous updates have spotted Izzo, or Assistants at his All-Ohio Red AAU games. See below:
http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/conten...910&CID=829861
There were questions about what big we may be going after in 2010, and this may be the top choice when it comes down to it.

Given 's reservations about recruiting against former assistants (see: Wilson, Jamil while Crean was at Marquette), I'm not sure how hard he'll push here given that Payne is a strong Dayton lean. Love to have him, but he'd be a program-elevating recruit for BG.
Also, his boy Juwan Staten, who he rides to open gyms at Dayton with, already verballed to the Flyers. This will be a very uphil battle....

My thoughts exactly. I don't see that happening.

Seen Baylor's class lately? Gregory's a good coach, he got Chris Wright in 2007 who had offers from several very high-majors, so he obviously can recruit.

Anybody know why this guy is rated so high? Could he make a big impact his first year? He seems a little underweight at 210 but he's got time to bulk up.

At least Baylor is in the Big 12. Dayton isn't some mediocre team in a power conference. Dayton is a good team in a mid major conference. There's a big difference there.

Baylor has also had a bit of negative press in the not so distant past (player killing another in the coach trying to cover it up? Almost getting the death penalty?). A good coach at a mid major can recruit pretty, look at Xavier for instance.

While it never will seem right for a top player to go to Baylor, they are a GREAT story if you do a little research. I believe it is like Bryce Drew's brother who went out on a limb and took the job despite being advised not to because it was a no win situation with their recent murder stuff that went on. Took it anyway and has led them to success. I think it is something like that.

I'm not saying that good players don't end up at mid-majors, because they do. But a five star player picking a mid-major over a high major is rare. Very rare.

While that is true, its not unheard of, and given the unusual circumstances of Payne's case (teammate going to Dayton, Dayton being a rising program drawing talented players), it wouldn't be much of a surprise for him to end up at Dayton.

I just don't see him going to Dayton. Once he takes some visits to big schools and sees what his options are or could be, he'll end up at a big school. I guess crazier things have happened, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I agree. Like Morrison at Gonzaga or Curry at Davidson.

These are different cases though. Gonzaga has known as a quality bball school before Morrison. Curry didn't have offers from major schools b/c of his size and that's why he ended up at Davidson. W/ him just goes to show that sometimes coaches make mistakes on kids too, as I'm sure any coach in the country would love to have his shooting.

Dayton has been known since Donnie May
I think it was May. Dayton has had national basketball sucess before and now and then has made noise. Donnie May and the team went to the NCAA finals against UCLA and won the NIT tournament against Kansas.

When was this though? My dad tells me stories about Holy Cross and La Salle being national power houses in hoops, but those day are long gone. I know Dayton is a pretty good program and has had some nice years recently, but they are not a powerhouse. Their championship over Kansas was in 1968. I cheer for Dayton because of MSU ties, but I will believe that this kid is going there when I see it.

Dayton has great facilities
And they got a very good recruit last year or the year before, Chris Wright.

They got Chris Wright in 2007, in 2008 they got Paul Williams, who is also a pretty good prospect.

When he commits there, I will come back and say that I am wrong. Until then, I still have a hard time believing that a 5 star kid ends up at a mid-major, a good mid-major, but a mid-major none-the-less.

Yes, I agree with you guys who feel that it is unlikely that he ends up at Dayton...actually, I was wondering where you got your info on that Stats. Not calling it into question, its just that I have not seen anything saying that.

Five-star big man Adreian Payne likes to keep his recruitment under wraps, but he did mention that no less than 20 schools are showing him significant interest. Off the top of his head he indicated that Ohio State, Xavier, Dayton, Cincinnati, Florida, Miami (FL), Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, Louisville, and Kentucky are just some of the suitors.

 Go get 'em !

Dayton Flyer here....but originally from Lansing and a State fan as well.
I am not sure how many of you realize how major a program UD can be. The term mid-major is always thrown out there for teams not from FOOTBALL BCS schools. However, UD Arena holds about 14,000....and no they don't share the facility, it is soley UD and really only used for basketall. They have two new facilities that would rival many big time programs for quality that include practice space, weight rooms, locker rooms, technology, etc. So call it a mid-major, and this discussion is probably somewhat pointless, but really UD can be at a level with many other BCS conference schools.
As this relates to Payne, UD has a real shot. He lives with his grandmother and is very close with her. He was originally quoted as saying he didn't want to leave home, and that basically narrowed his choices to UD, Xavier, and OSU. I have season tickets at UD, and I see him at probably 90% of the home games...many times he is with new recruit Josh Benson as well as Juwan Staten. Shoot, I just saw him last week at Subway with BG eating lunch. To say that UD isn't the front runner is crazy. Is he going there? Not sure, but UD is the front runner. Just because Izzo was there doesn't mean he is all over him, he may very well just be helping BG out a little.
