St8's comments (so that I don't have to come up with anything myself):

BTW

if you're on TOS, get a load of the video of Dwaun Anderson, a 6'3" 2011 guard from Sutton's Bay up north. He plays for Steve Bell's Parallel 45 AAU team. Bell's been talking him up since April but this is the first I've seen of him and it's VERY impressive stuff.

Have to believe he's on MSU's radar. I want to see him live, but I'll tell you what...the jumper looks better than Brundidge or Kearney among 2011 wings right now and he looks to be in their league as an athlete as well.

Yep...not exactly a frequent stop

on the recruiting itinerary for college coaches, that's for sure.

Looking forward to getting more of the story on this kid. He's not a raw talent...he's a talent, period. He was going head to head with Trey Zeigler and hung right in there with him, apparently...and the footage I'm talking about certainly supports that view. Bell is typically really good with this stuff, so when he started talking this kid up I took it seriously...but this is beyond what I'd imagined.

RE: BTW

FWIW, it appears that the good guys are very, very strong in his mind.

I'm going to have to make it out and see Parallel this summer if I can swing it. He's too interesting to not get an in-person look. The Team Detroit footage is important because he matched up against a player of Zeigler's caliber.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dwuan live when his team played at the Palace. He is a heck of an athlete. I agree with you St8, he's not a raw talent. He's a talent.

However, on raw talent alone, he is a dang good prospect. He really does a nice job of driving and dishing and getting his teammates involved early. However, he knows when to flip the switch and take over. He has a nice mid-range game and can get to the hole when he wants to.

RE: BTW

One of the most impressive things to me in that footage is his ability to take the ball to the rack and finish in traffic. He's got nice hang time and can contort his body to create space AND finish the play. That's not something you see readily in rising juniors.

If that's his standard level of play, take him now. Forget Brundidge, forget Kearney...take him and PLP and you have your two guards for 2011, no questions asked. Now, that's a big "if," but Bell doesn't normally miss the boat on this stuff, and he says this IS who the kid is as a player.

RE: BTW

The first link is from a year ago and trust me...Anderson has made the basketball player part of that equation irrelevant. I'd argue he's a better athlete AND a better player than any of those guys in his class on the wing right now, based on the admittedly small sample. I've seen Brundidge and Kearney multiple times and neither one of them has ever shot like that kid did in those two games.

No offer yet....still some issues to be resolved.

On the bright side, B- invited him to camp in AA this past weekend, but Dwaun said thanks, but no thanks.

anyone know how this kid ended up in suttons bay?

I went to Traverse City St. Francis (middle school @ IC) for a few years in the early 90's, and suttons bay is pretty much the last place I'd expect to see a high profile basketball recruit. I'm just interested I suppose-

I know that the talk around here is that he has been blowing up this summer. I know that his uncle is the JV basketball coach at Suttons Bay. He could be the top basketball talent out of the area since Dan Marle.

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in this thread but UMHoops keeps mentioning that MSU is Anderson's "dream school." I have no idea where they got that information but Dylan sounds confident about it. Sounds like he's Green if Izzo wants him.

You can check out a blog by Alex Schwartz of Northstar Basketball on Hoops Group Elite, July 5 recap by clicking Hold’n Court: The HoopGroup Blogs.

Quote:
During the course of the day I had the opportunity to catch up with a few players and get school lists.

Dwaun Anderson ’11, Suttons Bay (MI): Michigan State, Michigan, Central Michigan, Utah, Dayton, and Oakland
Favorites: “I’m still open.”
Dream School: Michigan State
Quote:
The biggest surprise of the day may have been a player from one of the smallest towns represented. Dwaun Anderson hails from a mere speck on the map of Michigan, but he is showing people here in the Keystone State that he can flat-out ball. Called “the most exciting player in camp” by a few people, Anderson was continuously dunking the basketball, be it off an alley-oop or right on an unsuspecting defender, repeatedly drawing roars from the crowd.
It appears that Dwaun currently has offers from Central Michigan and Utah.

Hoops

Dwaun Anderson, 6-3, Sutton’s Bay (Mich.): The athletic lefty reportedly showed his explosiveness on Sunday, but he looked a step slow on Tuesday. He was beaten defensively and was out-hustled to a loose ball. Offensively, he took it well to the basket and finished strong at the rim. Furthermore, he posted up well for a guard. He was not as aggressive as we would have liked to see, though.

Being a young player from an isolated area far off the recruiting trail may put him behind players like Ziegler or McCallum, whose backgrounds as the sons of D1 coaches growing up at the center of the college basketball world insures their precocity. Who knows, Anderson's eventual upside could be greater.

I played at an open gym with him this past weekend...it was the first time I had seen him play. Great jumper, lots of range...needless to say he tore up a small town open gym. (I think he had more dunks than that gym has ever seen). Some of the acrobatic layups he made were unbelievable.

I'll be interested to see if we offer him. I've been playing/watching high school basketball for a long time and he is definitely the best player leelanau has seen since I've been watching.

I am really intrigued by this guy. The brief film I saw of him he seemed to do spectacular things with very little effort. How good could he get if challenged by better competition and better coaching? I think we go after him big time if we don't get Ziegler, which might not be a bad outcome.

Similar size, same position - It depends on if they are willing to share minutes. Some players don't want to be a part of "depth."

I think they would make excellent replacements for Allen and Summers.

I don't know about that. I think we need 2 wings in 2011 even if we take Zeigler. We're replacing 1 PG, 2 wings, and one big. I imagine that's Izzo's preferred balance. One wing could be a combo inside/outside ala Raymar (Tommy McCune?) but at least one will need to be a guard, even with Zeigler.

What we may need and want may not be what a particular recruit may need and want. Throw Appling into the mix, who will no doubt get some minutes at wing as a Freshman, and with Allen and Summers as seniors, one can speculate that Ziegler, who says we wants to go somewhere that will give him immediate playing time, may see the situation as a bit complex. If Anderson does turn out to be a premier talent and comes in the following year the situation may be even further complicated.

You have a point, for sure. If (big) Zeigler decides to come to MSU, it will be because he's accepted that in playing for an elite program every player has skills and can compete for playing time. Whoever fills these spots (and it seems we need at least 2, if not 3, wings still in 2010/2011) will have to accept that too. Welcome to the big time, y'know.
Not wanting to fully hijack this thread, I think this legit concern of Utopia's is one of the unfortunate byproducts of the disruption of class balance brought on by taking 0 wings in 2008 and 2009. Need lots of wings fast.

Anyway, I'm excited about 2011. Lot's of good MI talent. Hopefully Anderson works out.
