'11 MI SF/PF Tommy McCune
Tommy McCune - Yahoo! Sports
Scout.com: Tommie McCune Profile
- Ht:6'7"
- Wt:185 lbs
- Class:2011 (High School)
I wanted to post this because I've always perceived McCune to be a little bit of an under-the-radar type of guy. I know that stars aren't everything but, though he's still at a two-star on Scout, McCune is now up to a four-star on Rivals and rated as their No. 87 player in the nation (2nd in-state behind Amir Williams). That's higher than I expected.
I hear he has the potential to play a very versatile inside/outside game ala Raymar. If that's true, I really like him for the 2011 class along with a PG, a true wing, and a big. He's from Saginaw High, too, and that can't hurt our chances. Not clear yet (for me) what kind of priority he is for Izzo.
Seriously ready for a 2011 commit.

Tommie McCune: The four-star forward in the 2011 class was the headliner at the event and his did not disappoint. Standing every bit of 6-foot-7 with long arms and good athleticism, McCune was able to dominate in stretches. What stands out about McCune is how good of a shooter he is for a player who goes inside as much as he plays on the perimeter. McCune showed off his ability to shoot early on, and then as the camp progressed he kept going to the rim with authority and also rebounded well. When he looked motivated, he was very tough to deal with.

Scouts Grade
92
Considering: No schools at this time.
Evaluation
October, 2009: Tommy is a long and skilled combo forward. He is transitioning to be a small forward but will play in the post in high school. He is a solid shooter with range to 20 feet. McCune is a solid rebounder. He has good length and athletic ability and a decent motor so he is effective inside offensively and on the boards. He is most comfortable on the perimeter but needs to improve his handle in order to complete his transition to Small Forward. He will also need to get stronger but some of that will occur as he continues to grow and mature. He is an OK defender though this was not the best venue for judging defensive acumen. His length and athletic ability give him the physical attributes to be a solid defender one day. Look for Tommy to move up the national rankings as he continues to improve.
This is the posting off of espn, scouts, inc report. Sounds promising, expect him to improve greatly by next summer. With no known schools of interest yet. Perfect Large Wing along side Byrd. Both 6-7, and maybe taller by 2011. What are anyone elses thoughts. Has anyone actually seen him play? What is the feedback from our Saginaw Area constituency?

I have not seen him play yet but I will try to make it to a few of his games and see how he looks. There is a lot of talent in Saginaw.

Please let us know what you see, scrimmages start in mid November, might be able to catch some early season action if you are not a serious rifle hunter!

McCune's hard work paying off -
I completely missed this on the site.
McCune seems to be a lot of people's favorite. Grady and Sampson are great options but McCune's local connection has a lot of fans rooting for him to live up to his expectations and get an offer. In the video, McCune, without much prompting, spends a lot of time talking about his work in the classroom, which you have to like. Can't hurt him getting an offer. Also, talks about wanting to stay four years to make sure he has a degree to fall back on. Nice.
Video and story has info about who's recruiting him - Providence has offered and MSU and Xaxier are in the forefront.
Regardless, Izzo should end the 2011 class with a legit inside/outside guy to fill a Raymar-esque role.

I love this kid when I hear him talk. Down to earth. Well grounded. Hard Working. And Talent to boot. I would have to imagine it is only a matter of weeks before we would extend a scholarship to him.

I don't know; it's hard to play Izzo. My guess is that the lack of a offer probably comes for one of three things:
A) McCune had some issues in the classroom - that would explain why he's talking about it so much and trying to fix it. Maybe that's what he heard from Izzo. Again, I'm just guessing, no inside info here.
B) Izzo wants to see a little more of him in action and is waiting to see how his junior year develops (like a Nix timetable)
C) Izzo significantly prefers Sampson or Grady and wants to give them more time to think over their offers. I'm pretty sure Sampson has one, not so sure about Grady.
But yeah, I imagine McCune will get an offer this season. He's ranked by some in the Top 100, he fills a need, good in-state school, good student athlete. Why not?
