Davis, is a consensus top 50 player nationally after a strong summer at both guard positions for Indiana Elite.
Also, Davis was one of Izzo's recruits at the Michigan State-Michigan game. WOTS is that he really enjoyed his visit at MSU and left very impressed with the school and basketball program.
I know we shouldn't count chickens but the smoke is turning to fire and wing spots for the MSU 2011 recruiting class could start becoming a hot commodity.
The list of wing players with mutual interest in and from MSU is long and elite.
Jeremiah Davis knows the Indiana campus and program well but it has been expected for weeks that he would make a trip to Bloomington for Friday night's Hoosier Hysteria. But that visit is in doubt according to his father, Jeremiah Davis Sr.

I like the sound of that! This is looking really good for us at the moment! Let's hope the good Spartan vibe continues! Come here and you're practically guaranteed a Final Four if you commit to the program.
He says he sees himself as a PG more than a SG. With Kalin, Summers and Allen all graduating he might have a chance to step in for some serious PT as a true Freshman.

Which is why it makes his recruitment's connection to PLP all the more intriguing. Do you take them both. and sacrifice some size on the wing or possibly limit your PG options in 2012-2013?
I have no idea how Izzo will play that one but I'm sure you take Davis because PLP isn't "in the hand." The big question is, do you still take PLP? Do you make him wait to see how recruiting wings goes?
Becomes moot, obviously, if PLP or Davis doesn't want to go Green.

And don't forget Appling. PLP and Appling in the same backcourt would be very small. Appling and Davis would be a versatile backcourt tandem with both being able to play either position. To further complicate the speculation - Ziegler and Anderson.
Unless he's an uber athlete (which it doesn't appear that he is) I'd rather go another direction with a taller and/or more vertically athletic player to slot into the wing position(s) that will open once Chris and Durrell graduate.

If we're strictly throwing out opinions, I'm fine with Davis as long as he's a point guard. Like you, I'd love to see him be accompanied by some wings with height in the 2011 class, guys like Kearney, McCune, Dawson, etc. You get Davis, two of those guys, and a big, and you have class.
What I'm specifically nervous about is the idea of taking Davis and PLP but I'll go with Izzo.
While Tom Izzo continues to work on putting the finishing touches on Michigan State's 2010 recruiting class, he and the rest of the Spartan coaching staff are busy seeking out options for the Class of 2011, and their efforts have led them to the state of Indiana and four-star guard Jeremiah Davis of Muncie Central High School.
Important tidbit from the article that I doubt Paul & Co. will mind me sharing:
Quote:
Though Davis is listed as a shooting guard in his Rivals.com profile, he considers himself a point guard, and he says he is being recruited to play that position.
Clears up a little confusion. Probably should change the thread title.

IF he's being recruited as strictly a PG then I'm down with his recruitment.
As a SG though, no thanks. I'm just not seeing the speed, height or ups neccessary to be an elite wing at the level we're talking about.
Thanks Tom Izzo.

He's already said in an interview that Izzo sees him as a PG. Kalin will be gone at that point and he'd back up Korie. A little more size to play D on bigger PG's we might face too.

I think the important subtext that people are addressing is whether a commitment from Davis would close the door on a commitable offer to PLP right now. There's lots of other propects out there still and MSU needs wings.
We can say Davis is a point but if you take him and PLP in 2011, I imagine he sees a lot of time off the ball.
Just like Appling - he's a point, sure, but I bet our starting line-up for 2011 includes he and Lucious on the court together, making him a wing most of the time.
In conjuction, you start Lucious and Appling, and then have PLP as the reserve PG, and you again have Davis off the bench as a wing.
But if you take only Davis, he's your backup PG, and you have a guy like Kearney and another freshman backing up Appling and Byrd (your likely wing starters, I'd assume). That's my preference (and other's apparently) if I "play Izzo."
In a nutshell, what I'm saying is regardless of where you intend him, you take PLP and Davis both in 2011 and Davis (or PLP!) becomes a wing at first as a necessity.

No one said I was the coach of the team. We all play fantasy GM from time to time. It's just fans giving their OPINIONS on who they'd like to target and who they wouldn't. That's all they are though, opinions. Some are semi-informed and some aren't. I don't think every post needs to have a TIFWIW disclaimer for folks like you who don't understand that fact but then again maybe they do.

Then I'm down with it.
My thoughts above are just being consistent with my hope that MSU trends back to the days when the roster makeup included a lot of SG's and SF's with size and athleticism (ie. 6'5"-6'8"). Those lineups were versatile as hell and could defend and rebound like gangbusters. I'm just not a big fan of 6'2 and 6'3" SG's and SF's unless they have top shelf athleticism, like a Shannon Brown.

For me, with those two...it's an either or situation. Four PG's is too many on a roster that would only be a year away from losing it's elite forwards (Roe and Green) to graduation. After garnering a committment from one of the available PG's, I'd like to see Izzo target an athletic combo-forward or two with the remaining scholarships. Players that will compliment big bodies like Nix, Sherman and Gauna.
