Newspaper story Smoker is lighting it up in the AFL

http://noise.typepad.com/bleeding_gr...ting.html#more

On a side note: I met Dan Alexander when I was living in Orlando (he was struggling to stay on with the Titans at the time) he's a good guy. He played for Nebraska and IIRC, he had a fumble in a Bowl game that Big Red fans will never, ever forgive him for.

Quote:
Smoker sighting
Jeff Smoker is now the starting QB for the Nashville Kats. In his first game as a starter, Jeff completed 19-of-30 passed for 273 yards and five touchdowns in the Kats' 69-55 win over the Utah Blaze.

The following quotes were passed along by the Michigan State sports information department via the Kats media day interviews.

NASHVILLE KATS QB JEFF SMOKER

On his progression in the AFL
“Well, I just want to build on the foundation that I laid the first game. I think I came out and played well and I want to keep learning, building on my skills, and just keep winning games.”

On his transition from the NFL to AFL
“You know, it was actually a little tougher than I thought it was going to be. It took me a little while to get used to the tighter throws, getting the ball out faster, and the smaller field. It took me well into camp before I had a complete grasp on it.”

On Kats FB Dan Alexander pass protecting and his AFL-record tying five touchdown’s in Week 3 vs. Utah
“He did a great job. Pass protection is not only the offensive line but it depends on the fullback as well. Dan did an incredible job. I had a lot of time back there and when he was called to run the ball he ran it tough. He is a beast back there.”

On players using the AFL to get valuable football experience
“This is my first year playing in the AFL, but by just watching it, year by year, guys are getting more exposure. ESPN has bought a stake in it now, and I think NFL scouts and NFL front offices are starting to take a closer look at some of the Arena guys. We’ve only played a couple of games and I have seen some pretty talented guys on our team and on the opposing teams. ”

On making a mark in the AFL or using it as opportunity to springboard back to the NFL
“Obviously if I get another opportunity to play in the NFL, I’d like to because that is a goal of mine. I feel like I have the skills and abilities to play in the NFL, but if that doesn’t happen, I am very happy playing Arena ball and I am enjoying it so far. All that matters is that I’m playing football.”

NASHVILLE KATS HEAD COACH PAT SPERDUTO

On whether Kats OB Jeff Smoker has made the adjustment from the big field to the small field (NFL-AFL) as quickly as anyone he’s seen.
“He’s only played one game. He looked good but it’s only been one game. He’s like any other quarterback that starts for the first time. He’s going to have his ups and downs. Now he’s on film and teams are going to start to prepare better for him and every week… it will get a lot tougher.”

On what is the biggest adjustment in his mind from the big field to the small field
“I think that everything is quicker. Everything happens so much faster and decisions have to be made immediately. You don’t have as much as a balanced attack. If you look at an attack in the outside game, it is more 50/50, sometimes 60/40 run pass. Here, (in Nashville) its 70/30 and else its 90/10.

On how much does a running game help out the passing game
“We figured, let’s take a little bit of pressure off Jeff (Smoker) because everything gets even tighter down there and happens even quicker down there…. so we knew if we could run the ball effectively, we could take a little bit of pressure off the quarterback and make it a little bit easier on him. We worked hard all week and really all of camp to get that running game going and now teams are going to start thinking about that.”

I think this is funny, but please clarify: Is this a vanity reference or a coke reference?

Good for him. I'm still proud of the guy for taking what could've been a life ruining experience and somehow turning it into our only recent bowl appearance and only good season of football I saw as a student at MSU.

If JLS was good for any one thing, it was inspiring Jeff Smoker to go from crack head to fulfilling his potential in one year.

Please don't call it the AFL...

The only league that should be called the AFL is the American Football League.

It used to be about 50k, but i bet they get some better contracts now, with the owners making more with the ESPN deal.

I played black jack at a casino in punta cana, dr, with former lions RB James Stewart's little bro, who played in the arena football league for a few years. He said physically it was extremely taxing due to the small walls, and going both ways, but made decent jack.

There is no "maximum salary", though there is a salary cap per team. Top players can make $150K.

Why is this **** remotely funny to any Spartan fan? The guy made huge, huge mistakes... he owned up to them and apologized and worked hard to get his life back on track. There's no need for cruel and juvenile jokes at the expense of a fellow Spartan. Don't be a dick.

Especially when there's UofM football players to make fun of.

Good for Smoker. I hope he continues to have a solid season in the Arena League and gets another shot at the NFL.

I also hope people would just drop the negative jokes surrounding the kid once and for all. It's old news and the kid deserves to be left alone about it now.
