What happened with MSU and Chris Douglas-Roberts?
I really like his game, how come we didn't pursue him harder? Or did he not show interest back?

Sounds like a Calipari recruit.

We can't recruit and get every single good player in the country. It cracks me up when people think that we should have made a run at a kid when we're pulling in full classes of great recruits.

MSU/Izzo liked him alot and identified him early in the process as a player.

I think the point he's trying to make is the guy can obviously play and he's from Detroit so did we take a hard look at him. The answer appear to be yes we did but he went elsewhere. We can certainly recruit D1 level talent in our State, but you're right, it doesn't mean they sign on the dotted line. Conversely we may lay off of him if we land a player who is ranked higher on our board.

According to Rivals, we didn't offer him.

The recruiting has been good, not great. There are no sure bets though. Sometimes they take a gamble and go with their instincts. Take Mojo for example. I'm sure they could have signed somebody better but must have seen something in him.

I believe his academic issues scared off a good amount of programs

That may be, but he had a pretty nice list of schools that weren't too scared off

From what I remember, he had academic issues as well as some atittude problems at one of the summer camps that scared MSU and UM away.

Most of the schools on that "school list" backed off. He played for the USA junior team and he had some attitude issues which scared some schools as well.
Like I said, he had to transfer high schools to even play as a senior.
Things worked out for him, great to see.

Maybe some of the teams didn't like the fact he hyphenated his name to include his maiden name and that of his husband's.

It wasn't academics it was more an attitude thing. There were some red flags that made coaches think twice about recruiting him. If you'll remember the recruiting game in Michigan was CRAZY in 04 and 05.
Malik Hairston (04), Joe Crawford (04), Al Horford (04), Eric Devendorf (05), Chris Doug and Wilson Chandler (05).
All were at least Top 40 kids and none ended up instate. Izz and TA were pretty fed up with any kid that had any red flags whatsoever during that time. They really gravitated towards kids that didn't have an drama in their recruitments.
MSU was fortunate to land Gray and Neitzel early. Then they got Suton. UM got Jerret Smith early. Both schools lost out on Horford and Sasha Kaun.
They both lost out on Crawford and Hairston. MSU lost out on James Hardy.
**
I told Izz and TA recruiting would get a lot better (ie simpler) with the classes of 07 and beyond. So far it's been that way but the state of Michigan was just pretty crazy in the classes of 04, 05 and 06.

Thanks Chair, I remember we identified him and I was hearing a lot about him when he was a Fr./So. and then he disappeared and eventually signed with Memphis.
