All the windows-based, event-driven programmers came from Microsoft's Mac development shop (many were forced to migrate over to the Win environment to prop up Gate's jihad against Jobs). All the Windows office apps, and in fact most of the Win x.x requirements, came from the Mac OS and were copied over (with some improvements). People forget that the top group of Mac programmers anywhere in the world were at MS back in the 80's.
They took their expertise to Win and brought Frankenstein to life.

Yeah, but as a software guy, I can assure you that the DOS version of Word was like Neanderthal man - none of its DNA made it into the modern Cro-Magnon version. The Word you see today inherited its genes from the Mac app, written by the OO programmers at MS, not the DOS programmers.

Wired magazine's opinion on the cost of a Mac vs. PC. plus a bit more:
http://www.wired.com/gadgets/mac/com.../2007/03/73005
You get what you pay for.
Many of the comparison's I have seen only speak of hardware. You gotta look at the whole enchilada.
Hardware to hardware they are comparable except that Apple chooses not to compete in the very low end.
Then, you add in the software that comes standard on the Mac that allows you to do the things you want to do right out of the box with no headaches.
Then, you add cost of ownership over time (don't have the links to the studies I have read) And,
The Mac wins hands down except for those that just absolutely need the cheapest machine they can get their hands on.

Mac doesn't choose to compete at just the very low end? No, they only compete when you want to spend over $3000 on a desktop! Spending $3000 on a computer?!?!?! Tell me how that saves me any money.
Their low-end and high-end laptops are about $1,000 more expensive than a comparable Dell laptop.

Just a little tidbit:
I tried to load photos on my sisters laptop for my Mom to look at, and I was doing some AE work on my laptop. I plugged in my camera (Nikon D70). It took about 5 minutes for her laptop to build the previews for about 80 images. On my laptop, it took about 10 seconds.
My laptop: 3 year old Apple Powerbook G4, 1.33 processor, 256MB RAM
Hers: Brand new Dell Inspiron, not sure on the specs, but I guarauntee that it's processor and amount of memory dwarf mine, as my Dad put the package together.
I thought my laptop was dogging it, but it looks like it's not. I used my buddy's this morning, it's far slower as well. It's the OS people...part of the benefit is that there's less viruses out there. I'd rather keep the number of people using them to a minimum, because the less viruses there are, the less I have to worry about my Mac tanking it while I'm working on an important video or project. Again, I'd like to keep this side small, but you can't bag on these machines and Apple. They make superior software and machines for the COMPUTER'S NICHE (and that is not word processing or networking and such). Final Cut Pro is a far better than Avid (quicker workflow), and is closing the gap with hardware compatability and sharing. And Photoshop runs better on a mac (only CS2 has had problems). So give up on trying to bash them. They work for who wants to use them.

It is awesome but you might have wanted to wait...

If this happens within 30 days you might be able to sweet talk apple into something.

When I bought my 400mhz G4 TiBook, they updated to 550mhz within like 4 days. I talked to Apple and they sent me back $400. If they do update soon, at least give them a call. They may hook you up.

That's a lot of ass, as roughly 99.94% of tRCMB are nerds!

OK, so they aren't $1000 more expensive than Dell's there ... only $550.

Apple Releases New MacBooks
Tuesday May 15, 2007 08:40 AM EST
Posted by arn
As predicted, Apple released revised MacBooks today. The modest updates include faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB of memory and larger hard drives:
Apple(R) today updated its MacBook(R) consumer notebooks with faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB of memory and larger hard drives in every model. The MacBook is just one-inch thin and features built-in 802.11n wireless networking for up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g.* Every MacBook also includes a built-in iSight(R) video camera for on-the-go video conferencing, Apple's MagSafe(R) Power Adapter that safely disconnects when under strain, and iLife(R) '06, Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications.
- 2.0GHz, 13.3" White MacBook, 80GB, 1GB RAM, Intel Graphics 950, $1099
- 2.16GHz, 13.3" White MacBook, 120GB, 1GB RAM. Intel Graphics 950, $1299
- 2.16GHz, 13.3" Black MacBook, 160GB, 1GB RAM, Intel Graphics 950, $1499
|
I know you said that there would not be any features that would change your mind. Seems like a minor but decent upgrade. How is the wireless on campus? If it is truly fast, would n wireless be that much better than g? Call Apple and at least ask for some $$$.

Holy crap, you can put 3GB of ram in a MacBook for 179 bucks. That is awesome!
http://lowendmac.com/mail/07/0516.html
Quote:
By the way, you probably already know about everything from here on, but in case you don't and you have a Core2 MB/MBP/iMac, you may want to check out that 3 GB kit, which (holy cow!) has come down to $179 now! How's that in comparison to $650 from Apple?
When I first found out about this a few weeks ago, it was $289, then $275. I've never seen RAM prices drop so fast. The 2 GB module by itself is still a bit pricey at $129, but that's an option for someone who can't afford the whole 3 GB kit yet and will get you up to 2.5 GB for $50 less with the option of getting a 1 GB module later on when the prices drop even further.
Oh yes, OWC also offer some rebates when you send them your preinstalled RAM or hard drive in exchange, making this even more economical for all those folks who only buy MacBooks because they can't afford a MacBook Pro in the first place. Replacing the standard 1 GB (512x2) MacBook memory with the 3 GB kit would cost $179 - $20 = $159. Add in their extremely low shipping costs (even to Alaska!), and this is becoming a fantastic deal.
