Photo Chris Cornell - Live at Bogart's - Cincinnati, OH 6/1/07

Ladies and Gents,

Went and saw Chris Cornell last night, and the show was a 10 out of 10. That rating would also describe his voice, which sounded like he was in a studio recording an old Soundgarden or Audioslave album. I have some bootlegs from years past, and his voice occassionally get a little raspy(singing your lungs out back-to-back nights can't help). I enjoyed the two-and-a-half hour performance from about seven or eight feet from the stage. I'm still reeling from the breakup of Soundgarden nearly a decade ago, yet felt as if I was watching them right in front of me. Cornell's band did as close of a job as they possibly could in emulating the sound of Tom Morello or Kim Thayil's guitar riffs, or Matt Cameron on the drums.

The show started off with a rousing rendition of "Spoonman." and then just continued to elevate from there. Nearly every great song from every Soundgarden and Audioslave album was played (too many to list). I was pleasantly suprised to hear "Hunger Strike" from the Temple Of The Dog album. Though Eddie Vedder wasn't there to sing his part (the bassist stepped in to fill the role). Cornell described writing the song in just a few minutes as an extra track to add onto the end of the album. To his suprise it gained worldwide popularity and remains one of his greatest accomplishments.

Anyway, here are some of the pics I snapped from the gig. Good times, man.....good times.

Is that new album out yet? Rolling Stone gave it a crap review, but they know music like Paris Hilton knows rocket science.

I don't think it is out yet (at least not according to iTunes) - looks like just a single She'll Never Be Your Man

"Carry On" release in the next few days. I've had the album for over a week now, thanks to a torrent file I found on the net. I'll be as honest as I can be, I rate it around a 3.5 to 4.0 out of 5. I think it's pretty damn good, and I expect it to be a "grower."

"She'll Never Be Your Man," "Arms Around Your Love" and "No Such Thing" are catchy, solid tracks. The remake of "Billie Jean" is nice too.

If you checkout out his myspace page, you can listen to the whole album.

You know, I was thinking the same damn thing last night.

Robert Plant, Jeff Buckley, and Eddie Vedder are up there too.

very impressive choices but don't leave out rocco deluca (if you saw him live you'd understand).

I can dig the DeLuca reference. Not in my top three, but he's in the neighborhood. Funny you mention it, last time I was at Bogart's, I saw Rocco DeLuca live (along with Mat Kearney and The Feeling) for the VH1 tour. I believe it was in early April. I've had his CD in the disc changer ever since. Love the Dobro guitar.

cool. i saw him on that tour in milwaukee and his voice was pretty messed up. he gutted it out but it was noticeable. so my advice is that if you ever have another chance to see him again do it. i had seen him prior to the VH1 tour and his voice was in much better shape back then. actually, i'm seeing him headline at the house of blues in chicago in july.

back to cornell... any temple of the dog stuff played other than "hunger strike"? boy, i'd cut my left arm off to hear "reach down"!

yep, you got it. they made a documentary called "i trust you to kill me" that shows sutherland managing (or at least trying to manage!) one of their early tours. it's pretty entertaining. i don't think sutherland is as much involved anymore though.

not to go on and on about deluca, but i go to a lot of shows and he was the best show i saw last year (saw him at an outdoor music festival).

ok, back to the cornell discussion.

I saw him last year at the FOX when he was with Audioslave, and they played 2-3 Soundgarden songs, 5-6 Rage songs (including killing in the name), and the rest Audioslave stuff.. Place was rocking so hard you could see the balcony rocking up and down.. Good ass show.

I saw them at the State Theater on their first tour (their fourth show ever) and they rocked it then, too. I wish I had a chance to see them again with more of a catalog.

I here some are now looking at the Audioslave era like Van Halen fans look at the Van Hagar era. I say hogwash to that. Audioslave was trying to do its own thing and made some pretty damn good records in the process. They weren't Rage and they weren't Soundgarden, but they were good.

if you wanna go WAY back i saw soundgarden open up for skid row (gasp!!) in like 92 at the fox i think. the sound was pretty crummy though so i could barely make out cornell's vocals. not his fault of course.

as for audioslave.... they were just never my thing. i agree that they were a totally new band trying to make their own mark but for some reason all the talent in the band never added up to great songwriting if you ask me. i always loved chris's first solo album and i was thrilled when i heard audioslave broke up and that he was gonna make another solo album. from what i've read he seems much happier making music on his own.

That song was one of the highlights for sure. I had mentioned earlier that "Sunshower" was an acoustic. I made a mistake, as it was actually the last song before the acoustic set. 25 songs in two-and-a-half hours can confuse you a bit.

Cornell actually admitted after "Let Me Drown" that he messed up on the lyrics a little bit because he "hadn't sang that ***ing song in a long time!"

cincinnati setlist:

.Spoonman
.Let me drown
.Show me how to live
.No such thing
.Be yourself
.Hunger strike
.What you are
.Rusty cage
.Sunshower

--ACOUSTIC SET--
.CanŽt change me
.IŽm the highway
.Scar on the sky
.All night thing

--FULL BAND--
.DoesnŽt remind me
.Cochise
.Outshine
.You know my name
.Billy jean
.Like a stone
.Jesus christ pose

--ENCORE 1--
.My wave
.Seasons
.Black hole sun

--ENCORE 2--
.SheŽll never be your man
.Slaves and bulldozers

A few more pics from late in the show. I ended up being a couple feet further away near the end.

Gonna go see Chris Cornell for the first time tomorrow night in Sayreville, NJ

I hope the set list is half as good as the cinci list posted above.

BTW, anyone remember Juliette Lewis (the chick from Cape Fear, Natural Born Killers, etc)? She's in a band called "Juliette and the Licks" Her band is opening for Chris Cornell tomorrow night. The chick is crazy...should be a good show. She has some vids on her website worth taking a look at: * Juliette & The Licks

I saw Soundgarden at St. Andrews back in the day... Back before most people knew who the hell they were. Great show.

When Cornell is paired with great guitarists, as he has been, the experience is memorable.
