WOTS is that Sony now looking at adding a phone, touch screen and a similar iphone interface to their psp. The iphone is opening up a new market for sophisticated personal electronics combined with unsophisticated cell phone technology. Apparently, the psp phone's primary method of voice communication will be through bluetooth ear piece/headset...however, users will also be able to use it against the ear like a phone.
The gui is the easiest thing to create in these types of gadgets, so no doubt PSP phone will be really really cool, too.

It will take quite a bit of time and a huge amount of investment, the kind that AT&T has shown no interest in doing, to catch up to where Verizon is today!
When you see an AT&T iPhone and a Verizon smartphone go head to head browsing the web, the difference is astounding. Astounding how much faster the Verizon network is and astounding how beautiful the web pages display on the iPhone.
I wish I had both.

Ummm ... any time soon? How about now? AT&T already has 3G (the successor to EDGE rolled out in almost ever major market). It was Apple's choice not to support AT&Ts 3G - don't blame it on AT&T.

If you are basing your opinions on experiences from five years ago, you need to understand that many things have changed - and changed dramatically.
Kinda like saying that my Tandy computer sucked, so I switched to a NeXT machine.
I'm not saying that AT&T is the best for everyone. Everyone is different, and no single provider provides the best coverage for everyone everywhere they go. In my experiences though, AT&T is the best (that is primarily is West MI, NYC, and Greenville(SC), though).

1. AT&T's high speed data coverage is pathetic compared to Verizon in Los Angeles. Most of the city is not covered with 3G.
2. AT&T's 3G network is about 1/3 as fast as Verizon's.
3. AT&T's voice quality and coverage is also not as good as Verizon's.
So, yeah, they still have a ways to go before they catch up... at least from my perspective here in LA.
And I'll still probably get an iPhone and grudgingly sign a contract w/ AT&T.

Correct. Apple is opening up a niche where they apply low technology voice capabilities to a sophisticated gadget. The SONY PSP Phone will be really cool if they decide to bring this to market. Just don't expect any sophisticated cell technology coming from those products.

Hi. I work in a company with about 200 technology nerds. I'm pretty much exposed to the entire gamut. My opinions are based off of now, not 5 years ago. Anyway, I know that quality of coverage changes from city to city. I'm only saying AT&T sucks here in LA. I have no experience in other cities using AT&T.
Have you used AT&T or Verizon in LA for any length of time?

I hope the people anxious for it to be unlocked realize that, at least in the US, unlocking this phone would only add T-Mobile and maybe some very small carriers. The iPhone is a GSM phone. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA, not GSM.
Not even the absolute best hackers in the world can get the iPhone to work on Sprint or Verizon. It's not a software issue, it's a hardware issue.
Most of Europe does use GSM though, so an unlocked iPhone would be beneficial to Europeans.

Of course, I am with T-Mobile. I usually buy euro unlocked phones via ebay. Pop in the sim and am good to go. In the EU, phones must be unlockable so the phones will be here this fall.
The real reason to want to unlock them is to sell them overseas. The iPhone has all the GSM freqencies covered. Lot of money will be made selling them via the "black" market until aan official release in the fall in the EU. Elsewhere in the world, who knows what Apple has planned?

Good Point. I forgot about GSM/CDMA

Not at all. It's just interesting following this phenomenomenomenon.... I do think that the product will lead to lots of innovation by Apple in the future and other companies to keep up...that means all of us win.

Trevor, I agree. But it just isn't the products that will get better but the service as well. Mr. Jobs is playing tough with the wireless companies and he looks like he might be winning so far. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if that $50 million that ATT spent on upgrading the EDGE network was a requirement from Jobs. To my knowledge, no device company has been able to get a wireless company to change things the way Jobs and iPhone have.

For comparison most Palm, Windows Mobile and Symbian users can get their batteries replaced for $15 and the process takes like 30 seconds.

If you have Applecare, they will replace batteries within 2 years for free.
By the time that iPhones need batteries replaced though, there will be plenty of companies that will offer battery replacement services for them. You can get an iPod battery replaced for around $25 these days and it also supposedly has a "nonremovable" battery. The battery would be the least of my concerns. I'd imagine there will be dozens of 3rd party companies offering iPhone battery replacements, probably the same companies that do iPod battery replacements already.

Well you have to remember, like 100 of them are Trevor saying "it doesn't matter that EDGE speed sucks, because you have WiFi too and a lot of people will have WiFi access most of the time." Which reminds me: Trevor, go take a dump on a sandwich and go try to sell it out on the street. When people ask why they'd want to buy a turd sandwich, say "hey it's more bread than turd!" Let me know how that works out for you.

And iPods are "sealed" shut. You can bet that all these companies that offer iPod battery replacements will be offering decently priced iPhone battery replacements. Like I said, the battery shouldn't be a concern at all. If it needs to be replaced within 2 years, Applecare will do it for free. If it's after that, in late 2009, there will be millions of iPhones on the market by then and a huge market for replacing their batteries.
Besides, by 2009 I'd be willing to bet most iPhone users will want a new model anyway.
So tell me again why the battery is a big deal?

Yeah, that was pretty much a worthless post.
And it appears to me that neither Apple nor AT&T need any of my help selling the iPhone. It's exceeded their expectations already.

Because Applecare isn't free either. It'll be $60 or $80.
Also I've seen iPods taken apart and i'll wager it's a heck of a lot easier than soldering a battery in an iPhone.
