Dude, I don't even own AAPL. Their sales numbers ultimately don't affect me whatsoever. No tears from me if they sold 10,000.

If anyone gave a **** about exploiting Pocket PCs or Blackberrys I'm sure they could do something similar. Fact is that the second the iPhone came out people went to town hammering on it so they could be the first to get the huge press. No phone (or maybe even electronics product period) in the history of the world got as much press on the iPhone.
It certainly doesn't excuse having the hole there, but it definitely explains why it was found so quickly.

Why wouldn't people be interested in exploiting Windows Mobile or Blackberries?
Just guessing - but I'd bet there are 10x more Blackberries out there than iPhones.

Its kind of funny seeing an apple guy use the old "market share/attention vs security" argument.

I'm not arguing market share, I'm arguing press. If a Blackberry was exploited it would not garner half the press it does when it happens to the iPhone.

Apple sells 270,000 iPhones in the first two days
Published: 04:40 PM EST Apple Inc. said Wednesday that it sold 270,000 iPhones in the final 30 hours of its fiscal third quarter -- the first time the gadgets were available for purchase in the United States. Apple's growth rate more than 2 1/2 times the predicted growth rate for the quarter. Mac notebooks up 42%. 9.8 million iPods, 31% growth over the quarter.
|
Oh that's just horrible for 30 hours of sales...horrible ...and that doesn't even count Sunday or online orders.

In addition to first weekend iPhone sales, Apple also announced Wednesday that third quarter profits rose to $818 million, or $.92 per diluted share, on sales of $5.41 billion.

There's also a company, as I predicted, that is already offering $25 battery replacements for iPhones.

Not far from what I posted yesterday when I guessed it would come to around 250k. (Puts me within 8%)
Still only brings the number to about half of original estimates.

Original estimates were for the entire weekend and included online sales. They easily could have sold 200,000+ online and on Sunday. Not too shabby at all.

They offer installation services too for $20, but many will have no trouble at all doing it themselves. Considering that this is only the first company to offer it, there will be at least a dozen more companies offering the same service within a year, which will drive the cost down even more. By the time one really needs to be replaced for the average user, you'll be able to have the whole thing done for $25-30.
As I said before, the battery isn't much of an issue at all. A non-issue really. By the time it needs to be replaced, most will want a new iPhone anyway.

1) Most of the estimates also only included Fri/Sat as they were for the quarter
2) No way sales are as strong on day 3 as on day 1 or 2.
3) You said stores were sold out by late in the the weekend, how much do you think they sold from stores that were sold out?
4) The Apple number includes iPhones scheduled to be shipped on Friday and saturday which already included online sales.
Read any number of articles (thestreet.com, NY times) These numbers are way below expectations.

Jobs also announced today that the goal is now to reach 1 million devices sold by the end of this quarter (september) which means he only expects to sell 750,000 units this quarter. At that rate, they would only sell 4.75 million in the US by the end of 2008 - less than half of their original goal of 10 million.

If they sold out in all their stores, and they did, they obviously met their own expectations. There's no other explanation. They sold as many as they had in inventory.
Also, you're incorrect about the expectations. Those were for the whole weekend.

Just wait until the iPhone Nanos come out this holiday season at half the cost. It's really just common sense that they will sell at a much faster pace. They will sell like hotcakes. Then there's the worldwide launch. I think Apple will be just fine.

And if they don't, you'll just say they are until the real sales numbers come out.

Then show me the article that says these sales numbers are above the expectations. I've already given you multiple that say the opposite.

It's really simple common sense Turbo. They shipped all the inventory they had to stores and sold out of all of them. Pretty difficult to sell more than you have inventory for in retail stores. I mean the iPhone is very cool but it can't magically replicate copies of itself...at least not until the first software update comes out anyway.

Actually that's the part I doubt, if you didnt catch that I was being sarcastic earlier. I don't think all inventory was sold everywhere.
So removing the sarcasm, my thoughts are:
1) Most of the estimates also only included Fri/Sat as they were for the quarter
2) No way sales are as strong on day 3 as on day 1 or 2.
3) The Apple number includes iPhones scheduled to be shipped on Friday and saturday which already included online sales.
4) Jobs seems to have lowered his long-term goals

By the way, AAPL is now up 12.94% in after hour trading so far tonight. In other words they've already recovered from your chicken little reaction yesterday and then some. Might want to hold off on sending Steve jobs any sympathy cards.
Oh, and it's at an all-time high right now.
