That's actually incorrect. The estimates were for the entire weekend.

Goldman Sachs analyst David Bailey originally predicted 350,000 in sales, but, after the device’s launch, raised his prediction to 700,000. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster likewise raised his initial estimate of 200,000 iPhones sold to 500,000.

With 270,000 sold the first two days, not counting Sunday, they basically exceeded Piper Jaffray’s original expectations and were about right on for Goldman Sachs' original expectations. Shame on them for not sticking with their original expectations. Including online sales though, they probably exceeded Piper Jaffray's revised expectations during the weekend.

So what are analysts saying now after seeing Apple's 270,000 sales figure for the first 30 hours?

JupiterResearch vice president and research director Michael Gartenberg, for one, sees Apple’s initial 30-hour sales figure as encouraging. “To sell 270,000 is staggering—the launch was clearly a success,” he said. “We are talking about a $600 phone. Nobody sells this many phones at that price. This is beyond anyone’s wildest expectations, unless your expectations were unreasonable. The real challenge is what happens now, and that’s all that matters.”

Ross Rubin, director of analysis at market-research firm NPD agreed, contrasting the iPhone’s launch of that with a Hollywood blockbuster. “This isn’t like a movie where the opening weekend is a strong predictor of overall success, and it’s not even like most retail products,” Rubin said. “The launch numbers are blunted because of the realities of most consumers considering a new phone only when their contracts are up.”

Yeah, analysts are already saying to disregard it, including the company that it supposedly originated from.

Apple shares slipped more than $5.00 or 3.5 percent in early morning trading on the Nasdaq stock market after TheStreet.com reported on a research note from Miller Tabak which allegedly asserted that Apple was reducing its production of iPhones from "9 million units to 4.5 million units.”

However, Miller Tabak analyst Peter Boockvar later told AppleInsider that his firm authored no such note on Apple. Instead, he said, gossip was passed along during a conversation and was subsequently overblown.

"Disregard it. There's no note on Apple today," Boockvar said. "It's pure noise."

Basically it was a false rumor. Shocking.

Also I don't think Tabak was asserting it, he was just saying the rumor was likely part of the reason for the stock dropping.

3) You said stores were sold out by late in the the weekend, how much do you think they sold from stores that were sold out?
4) The Apple number includes iPhones scheduled to be shipped on Friday and saturday which already included online sales.

Read any number of articles (thestreet.com, NY times) These numbers are way below expectations.

Actually, sales reports were spot on. Apple met their sales expectations. However, they are experiencing severe return rates on these sales. Those are accounted differently and don't impact the sales figures.

Worked great for me. No dropped calls - never once below 3 bars that I saw.

I even brought out a wireless PC card from AT&T to try and it was great. It was 3G there, and I was getting speeds over 400k.

Again, I know its not LA - but close.

Doctor up what exactly? I simply moved an unrelated post into the appropriate thread that already existed for iPhone news. "iPhone news" has been in this thread title since it was started.

Got my first hands on today. I'll be buying one when my Verizon contract expires. I browsed the board for a bit on it. Easy as hell. The zooming/zoom out of web pages is awesome. I messed up typing the URL once and then flew right through it. The whole "believe in the keyboard" thing seems to be true. I just tried typing it as fast as I could and got it right.

Unfortunately my current contract doesn't expire until next May. Hopefully there will be a new version out by then.
