Quote:
How many trees did your iPhone bill kill?

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Early adopters of Apple's iPhone are getting their first service bills from AT&T (ATT) — and some customers say they are so detailed they belong in libraries.

Justine Ezarik, a Pittsburgh graphic designer and active Internet blogger, got her first bill on Saturday. She says it was so huge — 300 pages — it was delivered in a box. AT&T detailed every text message and Internet use for her billing period. "This is so silly," she told USA TODAY. "There's no reason they need to send you this much information."

VIDEO:
See Justine Ezarik on YouTube

A video Ezarik made of her experience uncrating the bill has been viewed online more than 100,000 times since Monday. Consumer tech blogs picked it up, spurring chatter across the Web about the bulky bills.
Tech site Ars Technica describes a 52-page, doubled-sided bill. Oak Harbor, Ohio, teacher Kelly Croy also reports receiving a 52-page bill: "The biggest phone bill I've ever gotten in my life," he says.

FIND MORE STORIES IN: AT | Youtube | Enderle

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel insists these situations are exceptions. "We're not sending lots of boxed bills to customers," he says.

The company itemizes text messages and Internet usage on its data network, which adds to the normal heft of the bill. Siegel says that customers who don't want the details, such as Croy, can call AT&T and change their billing.

Options include summary bills or online billing.

"We don't want to presume for the customer that they want detail or don't want detail. That needs to be up to them," he says.

Croy has since called AT&T to change his billing. "If you buy a car, you get a bill that's several pages long. You don't need 52 pages for a phone bill," he says.
Rob Enderle, an independent analyst at the Enderle Group, calls the finely detailed bills "stupid."

"Not only does it cost AT&T more to do this, it just upsets customers. It's bad business," he says.

The iPhone, which launched in June, costs $499 or $599, and service plans range from $59.99 to $99.99 monthly. Ezarik — a heavy user of text-messaging — says her first bill was for $275.

"A lot of that was taxes, activation fees and pro-rated charges," she says. "I was shocked at how high it was."

The Euros are getting on board: Orange, O2, and T-Mobile agree to iPhone revenue deals - Engadget

Quote:
Orange, O2, and T-Mobile agree to iPhone revenue deals
Posted Aug 21st 2007 4:59PM by Darren Murph

Merely days after we caught wind of Apple's rumored discussions with Vodafone, three other European carriers became the ones to reportedly agree to Apple's terms. According to FinancialTimes, "Apple has succeeded in committing European mobile phone operators that want exclusively to sell its new iPhone to share parts of their revenues with the technology group." The contract, which was signed by T-Mobile Germany, Orange, and O2, "requires that the operators hand over to Apple ten-percent of the revenues made from calls and data transfers by customers over iPhones" -- the same chunk required of those wanting to slap that Made for iPod logo on their accessories. Unfortunately, there's no word just yet on pricing, a launch timeframe, or any other lingering deals with overseas carriers, but we could very well hear more from all sides during IFA.
This is excellent news as this means unlocked iPhones are on the near-term horizon.

Still an "unsupported" solution. The euro launch is soon and as EU rules mandate unlocked phones, they will show up on ebay and other internet storefronts soon. The best will be if t-mobile usa implements the same solutions used by att by saying they are facilitating global roaming or something of that nature.

I was thinking the same thing.

Additionally, visual voicemail won't be available outside of AT&T. Not a huge loss, but visual voicemail is very cool.

Not the EU version. EU rules will not allow for this.

I believe EU phones can be locked for a contract term. Afterwards they must be unlocked.

TBarnes or anyone else with an iPhone - how are you liking it? The price drop has me VERY close to getting one. Really the only big negative for me is the lack of 3G...

I agree. The "rumors" are pointing to feb 08 for 3g in the eu. Also, the "rumors" are saying one of the real reasons for the price drop was to create a marketing and price slot fot the 3g phone, ie 599. already proved people would buy plenty of phones at that price point w/o 3g.

I am also waiting to see what stance is towards the unlock software on the net.

Rumor is that Apple never really strongly considered 3G because it was more of a strain on the battery and they were very concerned on the battery life.

3G in GR by the end of October.

I was holding out for the wifi/GPS 8820 Blackberry that ATT will not release. The iPhone was too expensive for me as recent grad, but with the price drop making it $100 more than what I was going to spend on the blackberry decided to pull the trigger. I got it last Wednesday and it has been everything I thought it would be and more. Everything about the iPhone makes sense plain and simple. It would be nice for 3g but edge is decent and if wifi is available internet is really good. It is my but I highly recommend the iPhone!

See previous post of some other phones.

Last date that I have for the 8820 is "Mid Sept". So it should be any day.

I had the 8700 for a year and I was sick and tired of T-Mobile Fewest dropped call claims because that is not true. If the 8820 had come out before the iPhone drop I would have gotten it, I like RIM I like the BB but the price drop got me to by the iPhone so congrats on Apple's marketing/sales team they got me. I read today that the 8820 was supposed to drop the Sept. 13, obviously that didn't happen.

I'll probably try the Pearl 2 or Pantech next (I gotta hold this one first though ... probably going to be too thick - two sliding keyboards).

I'd have the iPhone if they only could sync with Exchange.
