It's hilarious to see you guys get so bent out of shape about this. I'm simply making an observation/assessment, and some of you are getting REALLY defensive about it. I could very well be wrong or right. We'll never know, because you can't test both scenarios.

Not getting defensive, simply effectively debunking assumptions about a large corporations marketing strategy.

I'd be very disappointed if that was the case. I certainly wouldn't be getting an iPhone, under that scenario.

How could you possibly debunk anything? There's no way to ever test both scenarios.

They're probably not selling it for 30 days to let production ramp up, and I think its obviously a delay from their original plans since AT&T blocked employee's vacations from mid June to mid July, which happened before for a late June release. Of course, Apple would never admit a delay.

So why bring up your scenario in the first place?

Man...this is really tough to figure out...

You seem pretty cawk-sure about it, and the way you've been pushing your perception seems more like you think it's a certainty, not an opinion.

Fair enough. Since there's really no way to ever know at this point, it's not worth debating over anymore.

You will need a new 2 year agreement with ATT. This is from the apple website regarding the "half the price" comment on the home page.
"Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately."
3G is great, so is GPS. The apps store sounds like it has potential too. I really really really wanted a 32 gb model though, so it looks like I'm gonna still hold off on it till next year when 3rd gen comes out.
Coming Fall 2020: the iHome.

Ok, so what's the scoop?
1. How long until they come out?
2. How much money?
3. The 3G network only benefits AT&T, correct?
and...
4. I've been waiting to buy up a couple old iPhones because I am on T-mobile and I want to hack them on the cheap...what do you think is a good price for a 16gig and how long do I have to wait to snatch them up?
Thanks. I await the ultimate response.

I don't think the wait is a negative at all, except for the few of us that are so into it that we were waiting to purchase one. We are not the average person. This price cut is the only feature that is going to put this over the top for the average person. That and the fact that the iPhone was a success with the early adoptors.
To illustrate my point, if we took a scientific survey today - fewer than 10% of the US population would be familiar with iPhone 3g, or the idea that there would be a new iPhone. By July 5th that number will be much higher. Do you still think the delay is in some way a bad move???

Going by what tSteve said:
Quote:
"The big news, is $399 to $199 -- we think we can check off more affordable."
"We think the iPhone 3G will be affordable to almost everyone. 16GB model for $299 -- for that model we have a white one
"iPhone started off at $599 for an 8GB device, which now sells for $399 -- we want to make it even more affordable. I'm happy to tell you the 8GB model will sell for $199."
|
Now: He said the iPhone sells now for $399.99. That is in an Apple store. You can go buy one for that price, no contract, and essentially use it as a Touch (unless you hack it, which lets you then use it with a current contract, on another carrier, etc).
So using that line of thinking, will I be able to go into an Apple store and pick one of these up for $199.99 out the door? Doesn't matter if it is implied that I will activate it, can I get one for that price? That'll be an interesting question, because it could change the dynamic of how many they sell. If the only way you can get one of these for $199.99 is to sign your name on a contract, then I think you'll see a whole lot less of them sold. At that point, your only audience is those who want to go buy an iPhone and start a contract with AT&T. I still think a lot of people will, but that market is a LOT smaller than, say, EVERYONE (well, except for you Verizon and Sprint suckers, lol).

Update: Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry.

Yes, but again, there's no way we'll ever know. It also looks like Apple had to release when they are, due to the FCC disclosing the information about the phone publicly. That being the case...I still think it sucks, but Apple now has a reputation for "launching" products, so not doing that would have been weird. If that's the reason, then their hands were probably tied, and I'd take it back.

Where is this from?
EDIT: n/m, it's from Engadget. Wow, that sucks. If I wasn't up for an extension, I wouldn't even consider it, with this clause.

Not sure how that works on other providers if you hack your phone...

Now? I doubt you're going to find anything for under $200-250 for the 8GB. July 11th? I'll be you can get one for around $175. By August, they should be well-under $150. That depends on what "$199.99*" means, other factors, and of course, this is all speculation on my part.

thank you, hexydes. the first questions were answered by an AP article, so I apologize that you had to repeat yourself, but the last 2 those questions are still blurry and a matter of opinion, which is why I asked instead of sifting through the last 4-5 pages.
edit: and maybe I'm mistaken but it doesn't appear that anyone really talked about non-ATT network availability and the hacking/pricing issues...but maybe i'm wrong...

They're moving to an Exchange server at my work and I'm looking for a good Exchange solution for Mac/iPhone. I wonder if mobileMe will work.
