geeky fan boys line up for hours at end to buy something. yeah posting on message boards is nerdy, but not nearly as bad camping out for a cell phone.

People line up for all kinds of things.
Roller coasters, tickets, autographs, etc. And people line up for electronics. I was actually involved in a mild riot at the Westland, MI Sears to get a PS2. I waited all night and they had 6.

Definitely painful. Probably won't hurt sales at all. The drawback of having a "worldwide" release.

I was at the mall for other reasons and just asked the Apple dude a question (He was outside the store directing traffic).

The activation issue to me seems like it would be on both ends. iTunes has to communicate to ATT in some capacity right? Still, sucks to get home to iTunes and not be able to get going.

Curious, how does their rate plans "suck"? And they are continuing to build their 3G network. I would imagine that the Detroit area is pretty much covered - I know the GR area is. Kzoo is coming later this year. Only Sprint is better.

I'm sure that there are tons of people activating non-iPhones today. I would be curious if they are having the same issues. If not (and my guess is that they aren't - but I really don't know), then the issue really lies with Apple and the process that they have dictated on how the iPhone must be activated.

Suck as in charging extra for text messaging on a 3G network when one already has a "unlimited" package. ATT is infamous for their nickel and diming customers. iPhone? Check your iBudget
While the Detroit area and other major parts of Michigan are covered, I plan on moving soon and the areas I am thinking about are not as well covered, yet.

Problem with syncing music to iphone
So i got the 3g iphone today (i didnt have the 2g) and im syncing my music with itunes onto it. I already have a large collection of songs that i use the older itunes for my ipod. When i try to sync the music, it only syncs about 35 out of 2000 that i have. WTF?? granted now, i did not buy any of them from itunes, but it should still work, no?

Oh no, $5 for a text messaging plan. And doesn't everyone charge for text messaging? I just checked Verizon and they do.

Get them included with tMobile. Been happy with their coverage and service since they were Voicestream. I have no problems with paying for things defined clearly. I hate being nickeled and dimed.
I guess you are an ATT fanboy.

Verizon works around this issue by simply offering phones that are seven years old and have the new feature of "color".

TMobile.
Apparently you live in a big city (and never leave) or on a highway.
I admit it, I like AT&T but can understand Sprint or Verizon. But TMobile? Seriously?

Interesting ... so I go to TMobile's website and select a basic plan comparable to mine with AT&T and get presented with the following option:
Domestic Text, Instant, Picture & Video Messaging
Send and receive short e-mails, text and instant messages (up to 140 characters), and even picture and video messages using your T-Mobile phone! $0.15 per additional domestic message.
Any 400 Domestic Messages
$4 .99 per month
Any 1000 Domestic Messages
$9 .99 per month
Unlimited Domestic Messages
$14 .99 per month

Verizon has like two phones in their lineup that I would even consider "adequate". They've been trying, but they've got basically nothing. Add to that like what you said (neutering the phones), and then adding their pathetic Verizon interface, and what you get is a phone that is pretty much good for calling people, and that's it.

so far the new features seem worth the upgrade. Using 3g now and it's snappy. Gps (in a few apps) is awesome. I've also downloaded some useful stuff from the app store. The mobile me push stuff I could give or take
Reception seems improved. Can't tell yet if there have been improvements to audio quality

I'm a bit afraid to ask ... what applications come with it or are available that use the GPS?

Seven year old phones? Just because Verzion doesn't have a myriad of "smart phones" (that the majority of the public doesn't want or need), doesn't mean their phones are seven years old.
Actually, I just checked....and they offer 11 different "smart" phones.
Verizon's new (7 years old???) phones:
