How funny would it be if Microsoft's live search program(which is free) worked on the iPhone? I've tried it on another phone I have and its not bad at all; in fact its surprisingly good (on par with Telenav that came with my phone IMO).

So far I've downloaded 3 other gps aware apps from the app store - a google app (basically all of googles products optimized for iPhone), a yellowpages app (finds whatever business you are looking for in your gps defined location), and a photo app (program called smugshot. It's a web based photo hosting service. You can geo-tag your photos). Nothing mind blowing yet, but still pretty cool. I've read that TomTom will be coming up with a turn by turn app.

So far I've come to understand I really underestimated the app store. In time there will be any app you need.
I'm surprised the iPhone doesn't have a turn by turn app...Verizon has had this for a while now. It's called Verizon Navigator. It also has the ability to search for any business and provide directions on the fly.

Yeah ... and the Verizon Navigator pales compared to Telenav (available on all providers). I have it with my AT&T Curve and love it.

My iphone comes Monday ... it better be worth giving up Telenav. Google Maps just isn't the same.

There are rumors that it is coming for the iphone though (keeping my fingers crossed): GPS: TeleNav Confirms iPhone In-Car Navigation App

Portland, is 3G and GPS or 2.0 better if you had to pick?

They are so closely tied together I'm not sure its fair to pick. There are tons of apps that would still be great minus 3G and GPS, but also some that couldn't exist without them. If I had to pick I would say 3G and GPS because I found the original iPhone to be very useful without jailbreaking it. My major needs - web surfing and iPod - were satisified but now partially better with 3G. 2.0 though will add to my overall experience.

Thanks. I am thinking about acquiring a first gen iPhone to use as a VOIP iPod Touch. If the 2.0 experience is that good, I will proceed. Looks like 2.0 already had been jailbroken though I do not know if I would do that having the appstore in place.

Typing this on 3g now.

How is your experience with the battery?

My battery runs down by dinner time if charging over night. I am hardly talking on it. I am using mapping and email.

Should I. Be concerned about how I charged it the first time?

so far I seem to be getting a days worth of life - similar to the last iPhone. Some things you can do to increase life: turn off wifi when no in use, turn off iPod eq, turn off iPod "sound check". I would guess also turning off the push services would save life but I dont know for sure

In other words, you can just turn it off to save battery?

I am not aware of these two things. What are they? THis is my first iPhone.

Did I damage the battery by not putting it on full charge before unplugging it?

You know i had one heck of a time activating that darn thing and then had to immediately leave my office without a full charge.

Settings > iPod. I guess if you don't use the iPod feature they wouldn't matter.

The battery should be fine without doing the initial recharge. Based on my use today I'd have to guess GPS is the culprit. Over the weekend I used Google Maps/GPS a lot while downtown showing a friend around and felt the battery died somewhat quickly. Today I used the net and used the iPod feature for a solid 7hrs at work. I had over half the battery left.

PC World - 3G iPhone's Mediocre Battery Life Still Beats Rivals

Summary: iPhone 3G battery life sucks, but others are suckier.

could you buy an extended battery? Maybe switch out every so often if it is that big of an issue for you?

Pales?

GPS turn by turn either gets to where you want to go or it doesn't.

It's like trying to convince someone that their fly swatter is better because its handle has finger grooves.

Just realized the AOL Radio app streams 97.1. I can listen to Valenti meltdowns on my iPhone.
