Yes, the E is EDGE. 3G is obviously 3G. Traditionally, G is GPRS (the first generation data network. AT&T doesn't have any of these towers left, but you may find it on a roaming partner). A white dot? Maybe GPRS or maybe no data? I dunno.

BTW 2.0.2 is supposedly out.
I haven't updated yet. My battery is done, so it is charging. Supposed to be more bug fixes.

I can sympathize with the 3G issues - at home I have them a lot (though I knew that AT&T isn't good here) but I just force the phone to Edge only and I have reliable call quality, and I have wifi internet so I'm not losing much. I'll be interested to see if 2.0.2 fixes it (and if the fix is a baseband update which I don't know if I'd want to apply).
So far where I've been, T-Mobile is the best, though I haven't tried Verizon (my chicago burb/city/West and North LP MI)

very interesting. the baseband code is the thing that needs hacked to get the phone unlocked. its going to be interesting to see if its the baseband that is the fix or not. potentially bad news for unlocking the 3G

Yes, Verizon doesn't want you to do anything without paying for something extra.....but if you do like 5 sec of searching on Google, you would find a free open source program called "BitPim" that lets you sync calendar, ringtones, wallpapers, etc. If BitPim didn't exist, then I would have dropped Verizon years ago.
BitPim FTW!!

I believe the white dot on the iPhone means GPRS.

Wonder what the stats are like on tRCMB?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/20/i...or-ipod-touch/
Quote:
For obvious reasons, we're not really big believers in optimizing Engadget for individual devices or platforms. Despite the unrelenting number of requests for an iPhone-optimized version of Engadget, we thought we'd let Apple stand by its whole "the real internet in your pocket" thing. And then we ran the numbers. We could hardly believe it.
So far in 2008, the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch account for some 95.8% of all mobile views on the site. We're not even kidding. It's pretty hard to argue with something like that, so we're rolling out a new beta version of Engadget optimized for the iPhone at i.engadget.com. (Don't worry, we'll still be keeping m.engadget.com active, too.) Please feel free to let us know what you think in comments!
Oh, and for the stats nerds in the audience, you can check out Engadget's mobile device breakdown after the break.

Top 25 mobile / non-desktop devices hitting Engadget (Jan 1, 2008 - Aug 20, 2008)

I'm wondering if I can fake it with a nasty combination of unix pipes and apache external process calls.
Not fun!!!

I'm only a little surprised. There is no doubt that the iPhone is the best mobile device for web browsing. I just wish that it would step up with the other stuff.
Also, curious - how would they know what device it is coming from?
And Nintendo Wii is a mobile device?

This isn't about iphone, but i didnt want to start a new thread just for this question. it's a 3g question. In att's 3g coverage map shows no 3g in east lansing however earlier this week my phone was displaying 3g where it would usually have the edge E when i am in east lansing. is att expanding their 3g coverage?

As of yesterday, I am the proud owner of a modded working T-Mobile iPhone. Any apps I shouldn't live without?

Yes, they are definitely expanding their 3G coverage: 3G: AT&T's 3G Network Gets Faster, Finally Coming to a Neighborhood Near You (Just Need a 3G iPhone Now)
I haven't heard it coming to Lansing, but have heard it coming to Kzoo by the end of the year ... so maybe Lansing too.

The iPhone browser is MILES ahead of any other phone browser. The main category it doesn't deal with is flash sites, since it doesn't support flash.

LG Dare has much better battery life, and a better network, with less dropped calls and better reception. I don't know how much iPhone plans are, but you can just add $15/month to any Verizon plan for unlimited data transfers (ie. web browsing and using VCast/Get It Now)....or you can just pay $1.99/MB, and not have any extra data plan.
Edit: I just checked, and the cheapest iPhone plan appears to be $70/month. You can get the LG Dare and have a $40/month plan from Verizon, or $55/month with unlimited data like the iPhone plan.
The Dare is not an "apples to apples" iPhone competitor. It doesn't have as many "apps", and none that are free. The browser is not as good.
If you use the device mainly as a phone, with some web browsing....then you should be happy with the Dare. If you have to have the best web browsing, and want to have "cool apps", with mediocre network coverage.... then the iPhone is probably for you.
