I have the iPhone 3G and it is the biggest piece of **** ever created.
I thought Apple made products that "just work." At least that is what the hipster tool I work with is always parroting. I live and work in the third largest city in the US and can't connect to anything(Internet/Voice) using 3G, what this crap phone was made for.
Even though it doesn't work, it will still drain my battery in this mode in 1.5 hours. BTW- you can't just pop in a new one.
I have to keep it in Edge mode just to make it functional. Even then, it will only connect to the internet 5% of the time, and never when I really need it. Even then it is slow as hell.
AT&T blames Apple, Apple blames AT&T. Guess what, my last phone was an AT&T branded Treo, I HAD NO PROBLEMS ANYWHERE.
The PDA and business functions are terrible, the calendar/reminder functions often fail. Itunes is the worst phone sync program I have encountered. You can not view any documents or pdfs with it. Apple wants to control all apps through its crappy appstore interface. This is the worst phone I have ever owned.
Apple has always been a company that markets ****ty products to idiots by dressing them in shiny colors. I am glad I never listened to any of those fools who tried to convince me that MACs were worth a damn, because judging by this phone, they are garbage.

Ummm ... I'm not saying that you are wrong about most of the things you are crying about, but you are certainly exaggerating a bit.
You can open Word docs, and I would imagine PDFs - but not sure that I have tried it.

so, how bad is the service in Chicago? I used to have a non-iphone 3g phone, which had TERRIBLE service in my condo (which is about 2 blocks north of the loop), but "upgraded" to a Nokia on the old (Edge) network. My Nokia works great, but I'd much prefer to get the iPhone & I'm in my trial period. How is the EDGE service on the iPhone? Is it a pain the butt to always be changing back and forth? Can you change from one network to the other while on a call?

Why haven't you taken it to an Apple Store and exchanged it for one that does work?
BTW, you knew it didn't have a replaceable battery when you bought it and it does have the best 3G battery of its competitors.
Please go back to Vista.

Then it might not be for you. You can manually switch back and forward via the Settings. I always go to Edge when I'm at home for better reception and I don't lose anything since the phone uses my wifi for internet access.

I have the iPhone, and it is worth it for the web browsing, but I'll tell you that it has by far the worst battery life that I have had (and I go through a lot of phones).
To be fair, I've only had one other 3G phone though - the BlackJack II - which my wife still has. The BJ2 is MUCH better. I have to plug it in every night or I can't make it to the next afternoon. My wife can go all weekend without it plugged in.

You are right old apple fans, I am so sad. Paying $30 extra for iphone internet service is a blessing from Steve Jobs, may we all be lucky enough to taste his *****. I know AT&T DSL costs less and works a hell of a lot better, but they are the man, and we are unique individuals who can choose a cool iMac colour which represents our individuality.
I am a fool for asking the apple genii to take back my phone, tho it may not work, they were so smart to refuse.
I am so glad I have become enlightened, and am now one of your rank. The people filing class action lawsuits should be so lucky. I am sorry about complaining about an expensive phone/2 year plan that never works, please forgive me.

Isn't all of AT&T's data plans now $30 per month no matter what phone?
I had my first 1st gen iPhone crap out on me and they exchanged it with no hassle. Maybe see if the new firmware to be released Friday fixes it, if not try to get another exchange.
I didn't mean to be rude with my first post, I was just puzzled that issues like (its so expensive, can't remove the battery, 2 year contract) were obvious before you bought the phone. Thats all.

I'm like 90%, nay, 95% sure there is a 14 return policy. Did the phone work well for 14 days and then suddenly decide to suck balls?

Correct. 14 days for the iPhone (30 days for every other phone).

Hum, My phone works just fine. Not product ever has a 100% success rate, but I feel a lot of problems seem to be user related.

what is funny is watching my friends that own and operate a datacenter buy and love the new iPhone, which they absolutely hate. they know their **** better than anyone, and it kills them that this phone is the ****, so much so that even they bought it.

had the iPhone since July 11th. Saturday apple replaced it with a new one.
I am convinced. The iPhone in my opinion has an issue with the 3G integration. The phone will not seemlesly transition between edge and 3G to get best signal. This evident during calls which will then drop instead or continue garbled.
This is important. Afterall this is a phone. This is the most major problem.
The battery issue is more easily overcome by better managing features you aren't using. 3g, wi fi, gps, are not necessary most of the time. Shut these features down when not in use and go more than a day on a single charge.
I am used to the keyboard. I like the recognition for it. It still is inferior to a bb keyboard. So for business primarily, this may fail to be the best option.
For entertain and personal life organization it is still winning with me.

Battery - Since I've had it for about 3 weeks now, I've only really gotten the "20% warning" for the battery about 2x, and I never turn off the 3G or anything.
just for my info - what else can you adjust so that you save more battery time? Turn off 3G? Turn off GPS (how do you do this?)? etc?
Another note on Apps.... I had the SportsTap app (free) - do NOT get this app... it worked terrible. It would take forever to load, pop up and show me last weeks football scores. It was pretty worthless so i deleted it.
A note on deleting apps/moving icons on your screen - how is this done? I've done it a few times where you like, hold down your finger on the screen, then all of the icons start bouncing and you can move/delete them - but I've only gotten my phone to do this like 3x since i've had it.... how is it done?
And for the guy complaining - I would take the phone to the ATT store or something. Chicago seems like it would be one of the largest markets and for you to be experiencing some of those problems.... there must be an issue. I almost always have 3G service (metro Detroit area) and even when I dont.... Edge network isn't even really that slow - it takes AT MOST 1 minute to load a website on Edge. And I rarely never have service and in the time that i've had the phone, i've had 2 dropped calls. ever.
Ok last thing - I heard of an app, something like iWifi or something, where you can basically make your iPhone a wifi router - how is this possible via ATT's rules about tethering? Anyone have this or something similar?

There is no question that the iPhone has the best browser of any phone on the market. Period. No discussion needed. To me it is worth it for that. The App Store is nice and the Visual Voice Mail is a bonus.
However, if you do go with the iPhone and are concerned about other features, you may not be happy. IMO the iPhone could greatly improve in the following areas (in no particular order): - Dropped calls
- GPS
- Email (especially around Exchange support)
- Calendaring (especially around Exchange support)
- Camera
- Video capture
Everyone has their own opinion on what is important to them, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that "this phone is the ****"

A great way to conserve battery life is to turn off the "location services" in the settings menu.

Yep, along with the 3G and Wifi.
I keep them all off so I can make it through the day.
However, it seems a little dumb to me that I have to keep these features off so that I can use the phone ... as a phone.
