just for my info - what else can you adjust so that you save more battery time? Turn off 3G? Turn off GPS (how do you do this?)? etc?
Another note on Apps.... I had the SportsTap app (free) - do NOT get this app... it worked terrible. It would take forever to load, pop up and show me last weeks football scores. It was pretty worthless so i deleted it.
A note on deleting apps/moving icons on your screen - how is this done? I've done it a few times where you like, hold down your finger on the screen, then all of the icons start bouncing and you can move/delete them - but I've only gotten my phone to do this like 3x since i've had it.... how is it done?
And for the guy complaining - I would take the phone to the ATT store or something. Chicago seems like it would be one of the largest markets and for you to be experiencing some of those problems.... there must be an issue. I almost always have 3G service (metro Detroit area) and even when I dont.... Edge network isn't even really that slow - it takes AT MOST 1 minute to load a website on Edge. And I rarely never have service and in the time that i've had the phone, i've had 2 dropped calls. ever.
Ok last thing - I heard of an app, something like iWifi or something, where you can basically make your iPhone a wifi router - how is this possible via ATT's rules about tethering? Anyone have this or something similar?
|
If you want to move an icon / app, just hold your finger on it continuously until it wiggles. Then just touch and slide any icon to it location. This includes those along the bottom. The apps with a small x can be deleted by touching the x.
In settings you can turn off location based services. Any application using gps will turn the feature back on. In network settings you can turn off wifi and switch off 3g. Now it operates like a standard phone. Of course the speed is there if you need it.

However, if you do go with the iPhone and are concerned about other features, you may not be happy. IMO the iPhone could greatly improve in the following areas (in no particular order): - Dropped calls
- GPS
- Email (especially around Exchange support)
- Calendaring (especially around Exchange support)
- Camera
- Video capture
Everyone has their own opinion on what is important to them, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that "this phone is the ****"

GPS - no turn by turn directions. Big miss on Apple's part. There are rumors that they will unlock that part in the OS so that software developers can make an application (maybe Telenav ... they make it for the BB). This was supposed to be in 2.1 (due tomorrow), but now rumors are that they yanked it out.
Exchange support - calendaring is absolutely horrible. You can't schedule a meeting, meetings come in as "invites", and it seems to have difficulty actually syncing your calendar correctly. I'm sure it will improve with later software versions ... but it is really lacking right now.

iPhone version 2.1 contains many bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
• decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
• significantly improved battery life for most users
• dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
• improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
• faster installation of 3rd party applications
• fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
• improved performance in text messaging
• faster loading and searching of contacts
• improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
• repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
• option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
• Genius playlist creation

Stop the presses and break out the Courvoisier, as we’ve just hit a major milestone in the ongoing mobile OS market share wars. For the first time, RIM and its BlackBerry OS have surpassed Windows Mobile market share during the 2nd quarter of this year. RIM clocked in with 17.4%, handily topping WM’s 12% not to mention RIM’s own 8.9% share during the same period of time last year. That’s a pretty huge step up. While the increasing popularity of the Apple iPhone is sure to ultimately have a destructive effect on both RIM and Windows Mobile market share, it’s clear that the Blackberry is far from losing its relevance in a competitive market. Now if only they could get around to releasing the Bold here in the states….

Calendars work well for me. Turned off the notifications. I can add a new event easily. Seemless with outlook wirelessly.
I want turn by turn. I am confident that someone is about to release that app.

Some of my issues seem improved or fixed with 2.1.
Fewer dropped calls. Longer battery life. Liking it better as a phone now.

Our calendars are becoming horribly inaccurate. I'm putting up with it because the web browsing is so great.
You are confident that someone is about to release a turn-by-turn app? Well, pre-2.1 they just couldn't the Apple OS on the phone doesn't provide the capability. 2.1 was supposed to and the early beta releases supposedly had this functionality, but also rumored is that it was pulled from the final release.

Battery life is MUCH improved.
I never had a problem with dropped calls, but dropping data coverage seems to be a more common occurrence.

Fixed it.... Do not update your phone in Airplane mode, after the update it cannot access the wireless network causing it to lock up.

2.1 has been great for me. I did not have a problem with battery life or dropped calls, but I did have some app crash issues along with an inability to switch between data networks gracefully. Both seem to be fixed. 3G reception seems better as well.

Yep. Sending a message seems faster, but going in to list takes awhile.

Had one calander mistake on months. Works great.
I understand that the phone has GPS and now all open access apps can use the GPS. Turn by turn requires someone to host the maps and routes on a server. What more would you need?

Yes. G1 has zero style. Looks like a turd. The "Zune Brown" option is also a nice touch.

Guess I'll wait, I have the 'free' phone right now, but am locked into Tmobile so it looks like a good option.
With my free Nokia phone it's not like I'm a bastion of coolness to begin with.
It's great to have a phone that people cringe to 'use'. Knowing that it is 'steal' proof.
It's like driving a rusted out gremlin.

Best Android Apps: Android's 10 Most Exciting Apps
Those are some pretty cool looking apps....
As someone stated aboved - competition = better for the consumer
That G1 is ugly as hell, but HTC Touch HD is looking very nice and rumors are that it will come to T-Mobile or Verizon in the future (cost w/o contract is about $800)
