Speed and direction variables. Apparently these are not available to developers. Again, in the beta code for 2.1 they appeared, but it is rumored that they were removed with the released version of 2.1. I don't know for sure ... I don't write code.
Telenav has stated that they will indeed write code to use their servers and data (same servers and data that Windows Mobile and Blackberries use) when it is possible.

Interesting. I wondered about the delay. I thought speed and direction were derived from location as it changes. Perhaps apple limited the frequency of accessing the data from GPS. Why?

Could use some help here... I'm tied to Tmobile but got the OK from my company to buy a 'smartphone', how hard+expensive is it to unlock an iphone, or should I just take the leap of faith with the g1... I know it doesn't have push mail (yet), but I can still OWA with it.
anybody got a 2g that wants to go up to a 3g?

it's not hard, but realize with an old-gen iphone you will have the slow non-3g data network vs. the G1...
also you have to wait for the software to be cracked on very update, or risk losing the unlock.
that being said, I'm also offering $$$ for a 2g iphone

I live in a totally non 3g area anyways...
Apparently nowhere in Mi, not even the happening tech savvy international city of Detroit has 3g coverage with Tmobile yet.

WTF!?!??!
My battery life has been awesome since the last update ... until yesterday. At about 100p yesterday afternoon, my phone ran out of battery life. It charged fully overnight ... so it lasted about 6 hours . Today was worse. I didn't take it off the charger until about 800a this morning and by 130p it was off because of the battery. I charged it and then took it off the charger at about 430p. Now, I'm already getting the 20% warnings.
This isn't going to be good.

Are you pushing your data, or doing it manually?
My battery life was cut drastically when i went with the "push" option.

Pushing it. However, I made no changes to any config in the last two months.
3G off. Wifi on. GPS off. Push email on.
I had it off and charging all last night. We'll see how it goes today.

Just downloaded the B10 Network application. Looks like it just has game highlights, but the quality is really good. Much better than most YouTube stuff. Looks like a mp4 optimized for iPhone/iPod.

I highly recommend the program called EasyWriter if you use email a lot. It let's you type your message in landscape - which IMO is easier, more accurate, and more comfortable.

It'd be nice if Apple was reading this site for their priorities with software fixes:

It's working on the Touch now.
Way better than the Apple weather app. Hour by hour forecasts, 36 hour, 10 day. Radar, location-aware for local information, etc. It's free and a worthwhile addition IMO.
BTW just upgraded to the 32 GB 2G Touch from a 16 GB first-gen. The speaker is a big help as is the side volume controls. Not sure if that's enough for most people to trade up but I also needed the extra space.

IPhone Apps: Gizmodo's 20 Essential iPhone Apps
Anyone have any of these?
The ones I'm inquiring about are:
1. Pageonce Personal Assistant - how safe is this? If someone somehow hacked into your iPhone... couldnt they basically ruin your life?
2. VNC Lite - what does the comment "as long as on the same network" mean.... network as far as what? If I'm at work and leave my home computer on... i'm guessing that isnt the "same network" - anyone have this and care to explain?
3. Simplify Media - how good does this one work... I don't have a very extensive media library... but some of my friends do. Do they have to be logged in or have this same app for it to work... or can I beam their songs to myself? Are they stored online somewhere or does the computer have to be on?
I'm asking for opinions from people that have these apps or know of them.... I know I could probably search around online and figure them all out... but it would be much more beneficial if someone knowledgeable could just .... drop knowledge

Podcast streaming
Tapping a Podcast's episode's name will result in the podcast being played via streaming (instead of a straight download).
- chrisgeleven
If streaming a Podcast through the iTunes Store, pressing the home button will cause it to continue in the background. This does not apply to video podcasts, which close as normal.
- jmccullough108

App Store modifications
An icon of a application representing it's corresponding category is now visible next to the text. Prior to 2.2, the category only displayed text. You can now also view applications by "Top Paid" (most popular paid applications), "Top Free" (most popular free applications) and "Release Date" (applications are listed from their release date, with the most recent application appearing at the top of the list).

Application deletion and rating
In an effort to improve participation in the App Store, when deleting an application, you are asked to rate it using the usual 5 star system.
- iBeast

App Store links
App Store links have now been fixed. Prior to 2.2, clicking a link to an application in the App Store would display "Invalid URL". The App Store now opens as expected.
- mcdj
Application screenshot viewer and individual buttons
When viewing an application in the App Store, you can now view multiple screenshots. Prior to 2.2, the first screenshot in the strip would be displayed. There's now a dedicated screenshot viewer, which always you to 'swipe' through the screenshots at full screen. Each application page has it's own individual "Report A Problem" and "Tell A Friend" button.
- hellomoto4

Auto-correction
You now have the option to turn off auto-correction in Settings > General > Keyboard.
- extraextra

Maps caching
The Maps application no longer caches images.
- NDimichino & nickspohn

The Podcasts on the Go feature is ****ing sweet. Being able to listen to any podcast or watch any videocast over the iPhone without syncing to iTunes is awesome....and you can download them on the fly to save for later as well. Very cool.
I was able to easily stream an hour long podcast from NPR over AT&T's network with no hiccups at all...and that was on EDGE. You basically have the entire iTunes podcast directory at your fingertips as long as you have a cell signal. Too cool.
