$99 iPhones are on the way apparently...

4GB iPhone with Video iChat? - Mac Rumors
Quote:
The most notable slide has to do with a 4GB iPhone 3G. While there is a huge disclaimer that the image isn’t the device itself, the slide depicts a 4GB iPhone model that will run for $99 and come with quad-band EDGE, tri-band HSDPA, a 2 megapixel shooter and, believe it or not, iChat video calling (oh hi, front-facing camera).
Also, it appears that there will be four models of iPhones ranging from 4GB to 32GB...

Four iPhone Models Ranging From 4 GB to 32 GB Coming? - Mac Rumors
Quote:
4GB to 32GB -- that's one hell of a range, but we're hearing from a trusted source that new iPhones in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities just garnered approval by the PCS Type Review Certification Board, the standards body responsible for certificating handsets for use with some carriers (AT&T, for instance).

Looks like most if not all of those will be solved in the next version.

Here's your voice control tanfan...
Quote:
With the iPhone 3GS, you hold down the home button for a second and a voice control interface is brought up. Simply say things like "Call Scott Forstall" -- if there are more than one entries, it will ask which one you wanted (i.e. home, office, etc) -- or "play The Killers"

Some cool stuff in the new phone, but not enough non 3.0 OS stuff to get me to upgrade. My regular 3G will work until next revision.

Wow, what a boring release for the iPhone brand. Lots of new features...that have been in other smartphones for the better part of three years now!

Pretty much a boring day all around. MacBook Pros are still really underpowered, for what they're intended for. My HP laptop has much higher specs, and it's four months old.

I'm still on my 1st gen since they didn't have 3G here in Lansing when the iPhone 3G was launched. They do now. I think it's time to upgrade.

I'm a little disappointed with the iPhone 3GS, mainly because the best rumored updates didn't come to fruition. I really would have liked to see a design upgrade, and the front-facing camera would have been great.

That being said, the new stuff under the hood and new camera, combined with OS 3.0, makes for a considerable upgrade.

EDIT: I probably wouldn't upgrade from the 3G to 3GS if I had one, but I'm going from a regular cellphone, so I guess I'll pop for the 3GS now.

Wow, I have to say Apple didn't bring it very strong. These "updates" are pretty tame. Are you really going to buy a whole new phone for extra GBs you'll probably not fill (and if you do it's probably because your lazy) and a little faster hardware? Where's the innovation? New phone design? Why does it have to be the same phone released every year with a few minor tweaks? How long are people going to keep falling for this? Why not make new phones with different designs that run the iphone OS? For being one of the most innovated companies, I'm sure not seeing it. What a disappointment for all the hype...

You won't get a front-facing camera because the only thing they're useful for is video-conferencing, and the US cell providers have made it VERY clear that they're not interested in doing this, despite the fact that almost every European carrier has that service.

We're basically the laughingstock of the rest of the world, in regards to the cell phone industry.

Yeah, AT&T won't even support MMS messaging until "later this summer." Apple needs to break away to other carriers IMO.

AT&T is the best solution for Apple. Verizon wants to **** their red goop all over the Apple UI, and Sprint and T-Mobile are jokes compared to AT&T. The bottom line is that all of the US carriers suck, and that's the way it is.

Unlike the Pre and it's 18 apps, there are 50,000+ iPhone apps available. There is plenty out there to fill a 32GB iPhone with. I'd prefer a 64GB version to be honest.

If you want to place bets comparing 1st year iPhone sales to 1st year "revolutionary" Pre sales...or 365 days from now iPhone sales to Pre sales, I'm down with that.

As for the hardware, it sounds like it's much faster than the previous hardware. Should be interesting to see what the app developers can do with the new hardware.

Absolutely is. I do not regret dumping my 1st gen after only a year for the 3G. I did like the aluminum body more than the plastic one.

Trev, you gonna upgrade to 3GS? I'm leaning towards keeping 3G but, of course, upgrading the OS on 6/17 for free. I'd like a better camera and video capabilities, (and faster, of course), but not sure it's worth the $$ when I've had my 3G for less than a year.

EDIT: Nevermind. I see your answer to this question above.

Meh, there's easily 50,000+ applications available for Windows Mobile. I'm not even close to installing 1GB of applications on my phone, and that's even counting games and such. And for Apple to call out how many apps are available for the Pre just shows how desperate they were to cover up the fact that this was a really boring update. Additionally, if they bothered to mention it, you can tell it's on their radar as a concern (same with Windows 7).

Only interesting thing from this entire presentation is the $99 3G. The only problem is that it doesn't cost $99, it costs $820 because there is a MANDATORY data plan attached (the only phone on AT&T's lineup to carry such a requirement). I think a lot of people aren't buying the iPhone for that reason (I know I would probably have one already if there was no data plan requirement).

Take a look at Apple's computer lineup and it's easy to see they are very, very unlikely to make a bunch of phone models. How many years into the iPod's life did it take to come out with the Nano?

This hardware update is light, but the software one looks to be great.

Pretty embarrassing that it took them three generations to get functions in that are included with free pink phones for 13-year-old girls.

Of course it's on their radar. They pretty much already called Palm out for (allegedly) stealing IP. The Pre v. iPhone comparisons are inevitable so may as well point out advantages when you can.

What, that the Pre is brand new, and thus, there aren't any applications for it yet?

Did you know that in 2006, the iPhone had no applications, whereas Windows Mobile had over 20,000?! Therefore, the iPhone sucks.
