late 90's, before his voice got really crusty from cigarettes, booze, drugs and staying up for days
either of these gents' voices would do

My favorite (and most unique) voice would have to be Richard Butler from Physchodelic Furs. A close runner up would have been Joey Ramone.

I can sing some pretty good Elvis Costello for you
He would have been my #3 or #4.

1. Dave Gahan
2. Geoff Tate
3. Dennis DeYoung
If I were female, the easy choice would be the certifiable lunatic, Sinead O' Connor.

roy oribison and van morrison would both be on the short list - probably go with vm for the panty drop factor
jerry garcia has to get honorable mention, if not for talent then for signing from the soul
great question
edit: If we were playing Who's Now (and who doesn't like to play that game), I would go with Brad Paisley.

I'd include: (all very different, but perfect for what they do)
David Coverdale
Sting
Hank Williams Jr.
John L. "Slappy" Smith (sang the blues with the perfect whine)

all i know is he had one of the best singing voices ever. you can nitpick or criticize anybody if you try hard enough but for me buckley is the guy. it's a shame he died as young as he did. he was a phenomenal talent.

if you dig jeff buckley, i highly recommend the book 'dream brother'
it chronicles jeff's life. as well as his father's (tim)
they tragically shared similar fates, despite enormous talent. Tim Buckley had one of the greatest voices ever, I should have included him

I agree. Incredible range...from "Queen of the Reich" to "Silent Lucidity" (although I'm not sure if he can hit the high notes anymore).

just to include a "new kid on the block" (and i don't mean the boy band!) i'm gonna mention rocco deluca. the guy has incredible range... do yourself a favor and see him perform live if you get a chance. he's not too shabby on the dobro, either.
